Easy but Deep 2 EP.32: Don’t Give Up — a reflection on continuing meditation when progress is not immediately obvious. This article summarizes the teaching attributed to Luang Por Dhammajayo and adds practical guidance for everyday practice.

In this teaching, not seeing a clear result is not treated as a reason to abandon practice. Meditation can have quiet periods in which attention still feels scattered or an expected experience does not appear. The useful response is patience rather than anxiety.

Do Not Measure Every Session

A single meditation session can feel calm, restless, ordinary, or somewhere in between. None of these experiences needs to become a final judgment about whether you are progressing. Notice what happened, learn what you can, and return another day.

Consistency Is Part of the Practice

Regular practice gives the mind repeated opportunities to settle. A short session that you actually repeat can be more useful than an ambitious routine that creates pressure and is quickly abandoned.

What to Do When Nothing Seems to Happen

Relax unnecessary effort, return to the meditation object you are using, and notice when the mind wanders. You do not have to force an inner image, special sensation, or dramatic state. The basic skill is learning to return.

Do Not Turn Doubt Into Discouragement

Thoughts such as “I am not good at meditation” can become another distraction. Treat them as thoughts rather than facts. Ask instead, “What small part of the practice can I do well right now?”

A Five-Minute Practice for Difficult Days

Sit comfortably for five minutes. Relax the body, notice the breath or your chosen meditation focus, and return gently whenever attention wanders. When the timer ends, simply note that you kept your promise to practice.

Carry Patience Into Daily Life

The lesson is useful beyond meditation. Learning a skill, repairing a relationship, changing a habit, or developing a calmer response can also take time. Progress is often easier to recognize when we stop demanding that every step prove the final result.
