Executive Case Summary: Karma of Binding Animals in Agony and the Merit of Offering Monastic Waistbands & Chest Bands: Relieving Frozen Joints and Fibrosis
The unwholesome karma of binding animals with tight, cutting cords during transport manifested in this lifetime as severe adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulders), widespread myofascial pain, and connective tissue fibrosis. By respectfully crafting and offering exquisite monastic waistbands (kayabandhana) and chest bands to the Sangha, the tightening karmic grip was unbound, restoring smooth joint flexibility and effortless mobility.
1. Imprisoned Within One’s Own Body: Frozen Shoulders and Painful Fibrosis
A man experienced profound physical entrapment as his shoulder joints and muscular fascial network gradually stiffened into severe immobility. Both arms became frozen, unable to raise even to shoulder height without agonizing, sharp tears in his tendons. A deep, relentless tightness gripped his scapular muscles, back, and legs, feeling as though invisible steel wires were permanently cinched across his body. Physical therapy and therapeutic deep-tissue massages provided only temporary respite; his body felt like a rigid cage.
Tormented by this constant constriction, he sent his case to Venerable Luang Por, seeking to comprehend the spiritual cause behind his physically bound state.
2. The Karmic Bind: Tying Limbs of Captured Wildlife with Cutting Cords
Through the meditative eye of Dhamma, Luang Por uncovered that in an earlier lifetime, he dealt in capturing and transporting live wild game, including wild boar and deer. To maximize cart space and prevent the animals from struggling during long journeys, he bound their four legs tightly with thin, coarse hemp cords. The rough ropes cut deep into the animals’ flesh, restricting blood circulation and causing days of agonizing, motionless torment in cramped wagons.
The intense anguish and helpless terror of those immobilized animals became a dark karmic imprint within his consciousness. When his protective merit waned, this dormant karma materialized as fibrous tissue contractures, frozen joints, and agonizing muscle tightness, mirroring the restrictive cords he had once inflicted.
3. Offering Monastic Waistbands: Unraveling the Knots of Ancient Karma
Venerable Luang Por instructed him to neutralize this restrictive karma by offering support to the monastic robes. He was guided to sponsor the creation of finely woven, supple monastic waistbands (kayabandhana)—essential monastic requisites that keep monks’ robes neatly secure and comfortable—as well as supportive chest bands and robes crafted from the finest breathable fabrics.
He dedicated himself to this merit with sincere devotion, carefully preparing each set of monastic bands. Placing his mind calmly at the 7th base of the body, he meditated on untying all suffering and releasing all sentient beings from bondage. As his mind settled into crystalline stillness, he visualized the knots of past karma dissolving into radiance. Miraculously, the persistent fibrous knots across his shoulders and back loosened. His joint capsule inflammation subsided, and his arms regained their full range of motion, completely free and unrestricted.
