Case Study: Karma of Selling Rotten and Expired Food to Consumers

1. Profiting from Poison

In a past life, this man was an incredibly greedy and ruthless food merchant. To maximize profits and eliminate waste, he deliberately took severely rotting meat and heavily expired ingredients, masked their foul odor with extreme spices and toxic chemical preservatives, and sold them to unsuspecting laborers and villagers. Consequently, hundreds of people suffered from explosive food poisoning, severe dysentery, and some even died. Intentionally feeding disease-ridden, rotting garbage to fellow humans to save a few pennies is a massive, expansive form of indirect Panatibata (killing) and Miccha Vanijja (Wrong Livelihood).

2. The Retribution of Karma

• The 4th Major Hell (Roruva Naraka): Upon death, his inner body was violently dragged into the 4th Major Hell. Monstrous hell wardens pinned him down and forcefully shoveled boiling, putrid excrement and red-hot liquid copper down his throat. His intestines instantly melted as he howled in unimaginable agony. He is resurrected to endure this horrific force-feeding for uncountable eons—the exact penalty for feeding rotting waste to humans.
• Incurable Intestinal Cancers and Diseases: When the karma eventually dilutes to allow human rebirth, it will aggressively attack his digestive system. He will suffer from agonizing, incurable diseases such as stomach ulcers, severe Crohn’s disease, or aggressive colon cancer. Eating even clean food will cause him excruciating pain, violent vomiting, and chronic diarrhea, ensuring he can never enjoy a meal.
• Extreme Starvation and Scavenging: The karma of fraud guarantees he will be born into absolute, crushing poverty. He will suffer from agonizing starvation. Driven to absolute desperation by hunger, he will be karmically forced to dig through literal trash to consume “rotting, maggot-infested food” just to survive, intimately paying the price for his past deceit.

3. Spiritual Solutions

However, deliberately selling spoiled food is equivalent to mass-poisoning humanity; the money earned is literal hellfire. Anyone who has engaged in these predatory practices must stop instantly. To counter this dark karma, they must aggressively generate merit by offering the most pristine, premium-quality meals (Phanit-Bhojana) to the monastic community and donating abundant, healthy food to the starving, desperate poor, utilizing the merit of giving life to heal their own rotting destiny.
