Executive Summary: Adultery Karma
A severe karmic case study from the Dream in Dream Kindergarten Wisdom School, taught by Ven. Luang Por Dhammajayo. This account exposes the devastating consequences of adultery, infidelity, and sexual misconduct. Betraying trust out of lust leads to rebirth as a woman or transgender person facing abuse, and requires enduring the terrifying Thorny Tree in the 3rd Major Hell.
1. The Fires of Lust and Betrayal
Engaging in extramarital affairs, having mistresses, or committing sexual assault are grave violations of the Third Precept (Kamesu Micchacara). This karma is born from blinding lust, lack of self-control, and utter selfishness, completely disregarding the tears, pain, and shattered families of the victims.
Betraying the trust of a loving partner creates a deep, psychological wound. The immense negative energy—jealousy, anger, and heartbreak—emitted by the betrayed partner forms a tight karmic chain that binds the transgressor to lifetimes of suffering and sexual humiliation.
2. The Karmic Backlash of Infidelity
Those who habitually violate the Third Precept will face grueling karmic retribution:
- The 3rd Major Hell (Samghata Naraka) and the Thorny Tree: Upon death, the astral body falls into the 3rd Hell. The sinner is forced to climb the infamous “Ngiew Tree,” covered in 16-inch red-hot iron thorns. Hellhounds and iron-beaked vultures attack them, while demonic wardens pierce them with spears from below. This agonizing torture lasts for eons to pay off the debt of lust.
- Rebirth as Castrated Animals: When they escape hell, they are often reborn as animals (dogs, cats, pigs) that are castrated, spayed, or neutered, directly paying the price for their past sexual misdeeds.
- Gender Dysphoria and Abuse: When the residual karma allows them to be human again, they are often born with gender dysphoria (e.g., as a transgender person facing societal hardship) or as a woman who is frequently harassed, sexually assaulted, or forced into prostitution. They will experience the exact heartbreak of being constantly cheated on by their own partners.
- Shattered Families and Reproductive Diseases: In their current life, they often face divorce, estranged children, and a high risk of reproductive system diseases (e.g., cervical cancer, prostate cancer, or venereal diseases).

The Buddha frequently warned that unchecked lust and sexual misconduct lead directly to the lower realms:
Kama Sutta (Sutta Nipata)
One who is obsessed with sensual pleasures is crushed by them, like a trapped animal. Engaging in sexual misconduct (Kamesu Micchacara), when practiced, cultivated, and frequently engaged in, leads to hell, the animal realm, or the realm of hungry ghosts. The lightest result, if one attains human birth, is that it leads to having many enemies and intense rivalries.
4. Spiritual Solutions and Mitigation
For those who have committed adultery or sexual misconduct, Luang Por Dhammajayo advised an urgent path to seek forgiveness and purity:
- Sever Illicit Ties Immediately: Completely and permanently end all affairs and illicit relationships. Return to being absolutely faithful and loyal to your legal spouse (“One love, one heart”).
- Seek Forgiveness: Sincerely apologize and seek Ahosi Kamma (karmic pardon) from the partner you betrayed and from anyone you sexually wronged.
- Strict Precepts and Celibacy: Strictly uphold the Third Precept. Whenever possible (e.g., on Uposatha/Buddhist Holy Days), observe the Eight Precepts, which includes total celibacy (Brahmacariya), to purify the mind from lust.
- Meditation (Bhavana): Meditate to still the mind. Replace the hot, burning pleasure of lust with the cool, refined, and supreme happiness of deep meditation. Dedicate this pure merit to your past karmic creditors.
