Executive Summary: Karma of Insulting Benefactors and Monks
A case study from the Dream in Dream Kindergarten reflecting the severe verbal karma (Vaci-kamma) caused by cursing one’s parents and insulting Buddhist monks, leading to devastating health issues and descent into the lower realms.
1. The Verbal Karma of Rage
In a past life, a woman had a fiery temper and a notoriously foul mouth. Whenever she was displeased, she would verbally abuse her parents with harsh and cursing words. Furthermore, when monks arrived late for alms or displeased her, she would rudely insult and berate them, disrespecting the field of merit.
2. The Retribution of Karma
- Oral and Facial Diseases: The residual karma in this life manifested as severe oral cancer. Her face became disfigured, emitting a foul odor, and she suffered from a constant, burning pain, akin to hellfire scorching her from the inside out.
- Life Obstacles: The curses she spewed at others rebounded, destroying her own prosperity. Her businesses faced constant hurdles, and she was frequently the victim of malicious gossip and slander.
- The 4th Major Hell (Roruva Naraka): Upon death, if the karma remains unresolved, she is destined for the 4th Major Hell (the realm for drunkards and those who commit evil speech). There, hell wardens use red-hot iron tongs to pull out and shred her tongue, while acidic hellfire burns her mouth repeatedly for eons.
3. Spiritual Solutions
Luang Por Dhammajayo advises that anyone who has committed such verbal karma must immediately seek forgiveness (Khama) from the Triple Gem, their parents, and anyone they have insulted. Following this, they must strictly observe the 4th precept, speak only kindly (Piyavaca), regularly chant praises to the Triple Gem, and practice meditation to radiate loving-kindness. These merits will help dilute the heavy karmic burden.
