Executive Summary: Merit of Dedicating Oneself to Serving the Temple
A case study from the Dream in Dream Kindergarten highlighting the magnificent merit of dedicating physical effort and volunteering for temple activities. This selfless service yields a life full of happiness, robust health, and constant support from good people in every lifetime.
1. The Unsung Hero of Volunteerism
During his lifetime, this man did not possess vast financial wealth to make massive donations, but he possessed a heart overflowing with faith and a strong physical body. He came to the temple regularly to help with absolutely everything—pitching tents, arranging chairs, washing dishes, assisting with administrative tasks, and facilitating other merit-makers. He performed all these duties with a radiant smile, never complaining of fatigue, acting as a true “giver” without ever expecting anything in return.
2. The Blessings of Selfless Service
- Radiant Mansion and Loyal Retinue: Upon passing away, his inner body was reborn in the Tusita Heaven (Special Merit Circle). Although his primary offerings were physical labor, his profound faith resulted in a beautiful golden mansion. He was rewarded with a massive retinue of celestial attendants who cater to his every need, directly reflecting how he once facilitated the needs of others.
- Robust and Perfect Health: When he returns to the human realm, the merit of utilizing his physical strength to serve Buddhism will bless him with an extraordinarily strong, disease-free body. He will possess immense vitality and enjoy a long, healthy lifespan.
- Constant Patronage and Support: In whatever career or business he pursues, he will never reach a dead end. He will always attract Kalyanamitra (spiritual friends), influential patrons, or even kind strangers who step in to support and uplift him—just as he constantly stepped in to help others at the temple.
3. Luang Por’s Teaching
Luang Por Dhammajayo teaches that making merit is not limited to donating money. Offering “physical effort” (Veyyavacca-mai)—volunteering to help the Sangha and support religious activities—is an immensely great and pure form of merit. For those who shed sweat for Buddhism, every drop of sweat will crystallize into diamonds of success in their lives. This merit acts as a powerful magnet, attracting comfort, convenience, and prosperity in both this life and the next.
