In our journey through life, a perplexing question often troubles good-hearted individuals: “Why do honest, compassionate people sometimes experience sudden disasters, financial ruin, or debilitating illness?” And conversely: “Why do unscrupulous people appear to enjoy unbroken luxury?”
The master meditation teacher Luang Por Dhammajayo of Wat Phra Dhammakaya provides one of the most lucid, unforgettable explanations of the Law of Karma through the timeless metaphor: “Negative karma is like submerged stumps; Merit is like the water in the canal.”
🌊 The Metaphor: The River of Life and Submerged Hazards
Picture a river through which our life’s boat must travel. Hidden beneath the surface are sharp, jagged wooden stumps. These stumps represent unwholesome actions and mistakes (Akusala Karma) committed across our countless past lifetimes. The water level in the canal represents the reservoir of merit (Puñña) we have accumulated.
1. When the Water is High, the Boat Glides Safely
When your merit is abundant, the water in the canal rises high above the jagged stumps. Even though the stumps remain beneath the surface, your boat glides smoothly over them without a scratch. In daily life, this manifests as thriving careers, physical health, supportive companions, and smooth sailing. Many mistakenly believe they have no past karma, unaware that it is the depth of their merit water that is shielding them.
2. When the Water Recedes, the Collision is Inevitable
However, our daily activities continuously consume merit energy. If we become complacent—failing to give, failing to meditate, and neglecting ethical boundaries—our merit water gradually evaporates.
The moment the water level drops below the tops of the stumps, the boat strikes them violently. Sudden bankruptcy, health catastrophes, betrayal, or legal troubles strike not by chance, but because the preexisting karmic stumps are no longer submerged.
3. The True Remedy: Keep Refilling Your Reservoir Every Day
We cannot alter past actions, but we hold absolute control over the present moment. By practicing continuous generosity (Dāna), observing moral integrity (Sīla), and training the mind in silent stillness at the 7th base of the body (Bhāvanā), we pour fresh streams of merit into our life’s canal, ensuring our boat remains high, protected, and serene.
