1. The Imbalance of Greed
In a past life, this man was a greedy merchant selling meat and fruit. Desperate to maximize profit, he secretly rigged and manipulated his weighing scales, making them tilt heavily to display a higher weight than reality. Customers paid full price but received severely shortchanged goods. Although each individual theft seemed small, accumulating this deceit over a lifetime constituted massive theft (Adinnadana) and lying (Musavada) that robbed tens of thousands of people. This severe karmic imbalance deeply warped his spiritual foundation.
2. The Retribution of Karma
- Physical Deformities and Asymmetry: In his current life, the karma of deliberately creating an imbalanced, tilted scale physically manifests in his own body. He is born with severe physical asymmetries—one leg is significantly shorter than the other, his shoulders are permanently tilted, or his spine is aggressively curved (scoliosis). He walks with a severe limp, his physical form literally mirroring the crooked scales he once used.
- A Lifetime of Injustice and Being Scammed: This karma acts as a magnet for unfairness. Wherever he works, employers ruthlessly exploit him and steal his wages. Whenever he purchases goods, he is inevitably cheated, scammed, and given less than he paid for. He will face constant injustice and find absolutely no one willing to defend him.
- The 2nd Major Hell (Kalasutta Naraka): Upon death, his inner body will be dragged down to the 2nd Major Hell. Hell wardens will violently hang him upon massive, red-hot iron scales. They will use flaming saws to slice off chunks of his flesh, weighing them on the scales to exactly match the amount he cheated from his customers. He will endure this unimaginable torture for eons.
3. Spiritual Solutions
Luang Por Dhammajayo teaches that honesty is a merchant’s most precious asset. Rigging scales is literally cheating yourself out of your own accumulated merit. Wealth acquired through deception will rapidly evaporate, taking all of life’s happiness with it. Anyone who has committed this fraud must stop immediately. They must practice “Right Livelihood,” actively giving customers slightly more than they paid for as an act of charity. They must strictly observe the 2nd precept, aggressively donate to charities, and meditate to restore the straight, balanced karmic alignment of their life.
