Executive Summary: Merit of Offering Drinking Water to Monks and the Public
A case study from the Dream in Dream Kindergarten revealing the merit of supreme refreshment. Providing clean drinking water to quench thirst guarantees the donor a life of absolute abundance, immunity from starvation, and an endlessly calm, cool mind.
1. The Stream of Compassion
During her lifetime, this woman possessed an incredibly generous heart. During the scorching summer months, she consistently sponsored clean drinking water, ice, and herbal juices (Pana) for the monastic community. Furthermore, she installed a free cold-water dispenser in front of her house, allowing weary travelers, laborers, and the destitute to quench their thirst and escape the oppressive heat. Providing water to sustain life and instantly extinguish physical heat is a massive form of charity that delivers immediate happiness to the recipient.
2. The Blessings of Giving Refreshment
- Boundless Abundance and Immunity to Hunger: When reborn as a human, the merit of offering water guarantees her life will be defined by absolute abundance and “coolness.” She will never, ever experience famine, starvation, or scarcity. Even if she travels to the most barren desert, fortune and sustenance will miraculously flow to her.
- A Calm, Cool, and Unshakeable Mind: The merit of extinguishing others’ physical heat directly extinguishes the “fires of defilement” (anger) within her own mind. She is born with a naturally cool, incredibly calm temperament. She rarely gets angry or irritated, and can easily maintain perfect composure even in highly stressful situations.
- Celestial Ponds and Wealth: Upon passing away, her inner body was reborn in the Tavatimsa Heaven. Her celestial mansion is permanently surrounded by breathtaking “Celestial Ponds” (Bokkharani) filled with crystal-clear, sweet, and fragrant divine water—the ultimate reward for constantly hydrating and refreshing the lives of others.
3. Luang Por’s Teaching
Luang Por Dhammajayo teaches that while a human can survive days without food, they will perish rapidly without water. Therefore, offering drinking water is literally offering life. Giving life guarantees a long, flawlessly healthy life in return. The merit of offering water yields extremely fast results, ensuring the donor’s life is consistently refreshing, smooth, and free of friction. Anyone who desires a peaceful family and rapid progress in meditation—where the mind easily cools down and drops into stillness—should routinely offer pristine drinking water to the Sangha and the public.
