Executive Summary: Vengeance Karma
A profound karmic case study from the Dream in Dream Kindergarten Wisdom School, taught by Ven. Luang Por Dhammajayo. This account reveals the terrifying consequences of holding grudges and seeking vengeance. Harboring resentment is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die; it only burns one’s own mind and creates a dark karmic chain, forcing enemies to be reborn together to slaughter each other endlessly.
1. The Cross-Lifetime Fires of Resentment
Anger, hatred, and the desire for revenge belong to the defilement of “Dosa” (Aversion/Hatred). When wronged or exploited, instead of letting go and forgiving, many choose to curse, hold deep grudges, and mentally vow, “I will get my revenge in every lifetime.” This vengeful vow creates a powerful “karmic chain” that binds the souls of both parties tightly together.
The Law of Karma will magnetically draw these karmic adversaries to be reborn together in various dynamics—as parent and child, husband and wife, boss and employee, or best friends. This proximity provides the opportunity to exact revenge, taking turns betraying and killing each other, spinning endlessly in the cycle of Samsara (rebirth) until one side finally yields and grants “Ahosi Kamma” (karmic pardon).
2. The Karmic Backlash of Holding Grudges
Those who easily anger, hold grudges, and seek revenge will face bitter karmic consequences:
- A Burning, Joyless Life: In their current life, their minds are constantly scorched by the fires of resentment. They age prematurely, look constantly stressed, and are highly prone to high blood pressure, heart disease, and insomnia due to the relentless burning of anger.
- The 8th Major Hell (Avici Naraka): If their vengeance leads to brutal murder or severe harm, upon death, they will plummet to the lowest hell, Avici. There, they are roasted by the most intense hellfire and pinned by red-hot iron stakes, suffering unimaginable agony for eons.
- Rebirth as Demons or Venomous Beasts: When they escape hell, the residue of hatred often leads to rebirth as hideous demons (Asuras) or venomous and aggressive animals (e.g., snakes, centipedes, scorpions, or predators). They are driven entirely by anger and the instinct to attack.
- Ugly Appearance and Constant Enmity: When finally reborn as humans, they will have an ugly, repulsive appearance and rough skin (because anger corrupts the physical elements). Moreover, wherever they go, they will be universally disliked, bullied, and constantly surrounded by enemies and rivals.

The Buddha taught that anger must be conquered by love, and hatred can never be settled by hatred:

“He abused me, he struck me, he overpowered me, he robbed me.’ Those who harbor such thoughts do not still their hatred… Hatred is never appeased by hatred in this world; by non-hatred alone is hatred appeased. This is an eternal law (Sanatana Dhamma).”
4. Spiritual Solutions and Mitigation
To shatter the chains of vengeance, Luang Por Dhammajayo advised an urgent path for karmic mitigation:
- The Gift of Forgiveness (Abhaya Dana): The ultimate revenge is to “stop.” You must learn to forgive, release the resentment from your heart, and sincerely grant Ahosi Kamma (pardon) to those who wronged you. Cut the karmic tie in this lifetime so it doesn’t carry over.
- Cultivate Loving-Kindness (Metta Bhavana): Meditate daily and radiate loving-kindness. Visualize pure light and love, and intentionally project it toward your karmic creditors and enemies. Use the cool water of Metta to extinguish the fires of vengeance.
- Dedicate Merit Constantly: Keep the Five Precepts purely to avoid harming anyone else. Whenever you make merit (e.g., offering food to monks, donating charity), explicitly dedicate that merit to your karmic adversaries, wishing for the merit to soothe their hearts and alleviate their anger towards you.
