Case Study: Karma of Killing Animals for Trade

1. A Blood-Stained Livelihood

During his lifetime, this man ran a slaughterhouse, personally butchering pigs and cows daily for decades. Although done to make a living, the brutal taking of countless lives generated a dense, dark mass of negative karma that completely shrouded his mind.

2. The Retribution of Karma

• Agonizing Final Moments: Before his death, he experienced terrifying hallucinations (Kamma Nimitta). He saw hordes of angry pigs and cows charging and biting him. He writhed in terror, screaming in agony, and even began making sounds identical to the animals he had slaughtered right before he took his last breath.
• The 1st Major Hell (Sanjiva Naraka): Immediately after death, his inner body was sucked into the 1st Major Hell. Hell wardens with the heads of pigs and cows used gigantic cleavers to hack his body into pieces. When the karmic wind blew, his body would reconstruct, only to be butchered again and again in excruciating pain.
• The Cycle of Samsara: After serving time in the major hell, he must suffer through the minor hells (Ussada Naraka), the netherworld, and existences as hungry ghosts and demons. He will then be reborn as a pig and a cow, being slaughtered exactly as many times as the animals he killed. When finally reborn as a human, he will suffer from a short lifespan, chronic illnesses, and bloody accidents.

3. Spiritual Solutions

Luang Por Dhammajayo teaches that trades involving the killing of animals (Mamsa Vanijja) constitute Wrong Livelihood (Miccha Ajiva) and must be strictly avoided by Buddhists. If one is currently in this trade, they must change careers immediately to an honest and harmless livelihood. They must then strictly observe the 5 precepts, frequently release animals to grant them life, and practice meditation to radiate loving-kindness, thereby diluting the heavy karmic consequences.
