Executive Summary: Karma of Cheating and Embezzlement
A case study from the Dream in Dream Kindergarten revealing the dire consequences of greed and defrauding others of their wealth (breaking the 2nd precept), which destroys prosperity in this life and leads to unimaginable starvation in the next.
1. Blinded by Greed
In a past life, this man was a wealthy merchant, but his greed was insatiable. He frequently used deceptive tactics, rigged weighing scales, exploited customers, and swindled his business partners into bankruptcy. His victims suffered immensely and harbored deep grudges against him. These actions forged a dark karmic burden that silently eroded his own wealth.
2. The Retribution of Karma
- Bankruptcy and Overwhelming Debt: Towards the end of his life, the residual karma began to take effect. His once-thriving business collapsed rapidly. He was eventually defrauded by his closest associates, losing everything and being forced to live in poverty and massive debt.
- The 2nd Major Hell (Kalasutta Naraka): Upon death, his inner body was instantly dragged down to the 2nd Major Hell. Hell wardens used red-hot, black iron threads to snap guidelines onto his body. They then used razor-sharp hellish saws to slice his body into pieces along those lines, punishing him for deceitfully “slicing away” the wealth of others.
- Rebirth as a Hungry Ghost (Preta): After serving his hell sentence, he is destined to be reborn as a Preta—a creature with a bloated belly and a mouth the size of a needle. He will endure eons of agonizing starvation as a direct result of his stinginess and exploitation of others during his human life.
3. Spiritual Solutions
Luang Por Dhammajayo teaches that ill-gotten wealth is “hot” and will inevitably bring ruin to its possessor. Those who have made this mistake must immediately commit to an honest livelihood (Samma Ajiva), strictly observe the 2nd precept, practice generosity to eradicate stinginess, and meditate regularly. These merits will help cut off the karmic retribution of poverty and misery.
