Executive Summary: Karma of Forcing Others to Drink Alcohol

A case study from the Dream in Dream Kindergarten exposing the karma of encouraging or forcing others to break the precepts, specifically by consuming alcohol. Even if the perpetrator does not get severely drunk themselves, causing others to lose mindfulness guarantees rebirth with severe physical and mental impairments.

1. The Root Cause of Mindlessness

In a past life, this man was highly sociable and loved parties. While he sometimes didn’t drink to excess himself, he had a terrible habit of aggressively urging, challenging, and even forcing his peers to drink alcohol until they were completely blacked out and senseless, simply for his own amusement. Being the direct cause of others losing their mindfulness and breaking the 5th precept constitutes a karma that directly severely damages one’s own intellect and cognition.

2. The Retribution of Karma

  • Reborn Mute, Deaf, or Mentally Disabled: In his current life, the karma of alcohol dictates that he will be born with severe physical and mental impairments. He may be born mute, deaf, or suffer from severe cognitive developmental delays (mental retardation). He will be completely unable to perceive, communicate, or comprehend the Dhamma—a direct payment for causing others to temporarily lose their cognitive abilities.
  • Shattered Family Life: The karma generated by promoting intoxication often magnetically attracts severe family dysfunction. He may endure violently fighting parents or suffer endlessly from the actions of an abusive, alcoholic family member.
  • The 5th Major Hell (Maha Roruva Naraka): If he dies with a murky mind, his inner body will be instantly sucked into the 5th Major Hell. Hell wardens will force boiling, red-hot black acidic liquid down his throat, melting his internal organs. He will endure this unimaginable agony for eons.

3. Spiritual Solutions

Luang Por Dhammajayo teaches that alcohol is a “habit-changing liquid” that utterly destroys mindfulness. By forcing or even casually encouraging someone to drink, one becomes karmically complicit in any sin that person might commit while intoxicated. Anyone who has engaged in this behavior must quit drinking “cold turkey” and completely stop offering it to others. They should actively campaign for abstinence, flawlessly observe the 5 precepts, and practice deep meditation. This generates inner brightness, slowly attracting and repairing their intellect for future lifetimes.
