1. The Pitfall of Greed
In a past life, this man was born into a wealthy family, but he became severely enslaved by gambling (Apayamukha). What started as entertainment devolved into a crippling obsession. He secretly drained his family’s savings, and when he lost, the desperate urge to win it back drove him to mortgage and sell off their land, house, and all valuables. Ultimately, he drove his parents and wife into absolute destitution and homelessness, causing complete family bankruptcy. Destroying one’s family foundation through sheer greed constitutes a deeply dark and heavy sin.
2. The Retribution of Karma
- The 6th Major Hell (Tapana Naraka): Upon death, his inner body was plunged into the 6th Major Hell, the realm reserved for those utterly consumed by vices and gambling. Hell wardens tossed him into a colossal copper cauldron filled with boiling liquid iron. His body continuously melts and regenerates only to endure the excruciating agony over and over again.
- Wealth-Starved Hungry Ghost: After eventually escaping hell, he is destined to be reborn as an emaciated hungry ghost (Preta). He will howl in perpetual starvation, forced to wander and scavenge for rotting scraps in garbage dumps—a direct karmic payment for imposing starvation and homelessness upon his family.
- Extreme Poverty and Sudden Loss: When finally reborn as a human, the karmic pressure will force him into the absolute poorest of families. No matter how hard he works to earn money, circumstances will always conspire to forcefully strip it away instantly (Vibati Sombat). He will be robbed, scammed, or face sudden disasters, utterly incapable of retaining any wealth.
3. Spiritual Solutions
Luang Por Dhammajayo sternly warns that gambling is “Apayamukha” (the mouth of ruin). No one truly becomes wealthy from gambling; any winnings are “hot wealth” that will eventually burn one’s life to the ground. Anyone addicted to gambling must quit “cold turkey” and completely abandon the illusion of winning their money back. They must return to honest labor, practice charity to uproot the deep greed in their mind, and dedicate merit to beg for forgiveness from the family members they ruined, thereby closing the gates of hell.
