Executive Summary: Karma of Hoarding Resources and Price Gouging During a Crisis

A case study from the Dream in Dream Kindergarten exposing the terrifying doom of disaster capitalism. Merchants who maliciously hoard essential food or medicine during a crisis and wildly inflate prices to exploit desperate people are guaranteed to suffer as starving hungry ghosts (Pretas), be born into severe famines, and die an agonizing death by starvation.

1. The Bloodsucker of the Desperate

In a past life, this man was a wealthy and ruthlessly greedy merchant. During a severe national crisis—such as a prolonged drought, flood, or pandemic—when villagers were starving and desperate, he actively weaponized their suffering. Instead of helping, he strategically “Hoarded Mountains of Rice, Clean Water, and Medicine” in his massive warehouses, artificially creating a deadly shortage in the market. As people began to die, he released the goods but “Inflated the Prices by Tenfold,” aggressively gouging desperate families who were forced to sell their lands and homes just to buy a single bag of rice. Profiting off mass starvation and exploiting human desperation is a catastrophic karmic hybrid of Adinnadana (Stealing) and Macchariya (Extreme Stinginess).

2. The Retribution of Karma

  • The Realm of Hungry Ghosts (Preta): The instant he died, his heavy greed dragged his soul into the Preta Realm. He was reborn as a horrifying Hungry Ghost with a stomach the size of a mountain but a mouth the size of a needle. He was tortured by “Unimaginable, Endless Starvation.” Whenever he desperately ran toward a river to drink, the water would instantly turn into boiling acid or fire, scorching his throat. He suffered this agonizing, unquenchable hunger for millions of years—the exact penalty for letting others starve.
  • Born into Severe Famine and Desolation: When the karma dilutes enough to permit a human rebirth, he is karmically magnetized to the most desperate environments on Earth. He is guaranteed to be born into a “Barren, Famine-Stricken Wasteland.” He will live his entire life in a state of absolute, grinding poverty, constantly battling severe malnutrition and thirst, exactly mirroring the desperation he once inflicted on his customers.
  • Agonizing Death by Starvation: The karmic wheel executes flawless justice. No matter how hard he tries to secure food in his human life, his efforts will fail. He is karmically cursed to contract diseases that prevent him from swallowing or absorbing nutrients. Ultimately, he is destined to “Die a Pathetic, Agonizing Death by Starvation,” completely alone and destitute.

3. Spiritual Solutions

Luang Por Dhammajayo issues a chilling warning: “Wealth accumulated by bleeding the desperate is a direct ticket to eternal starvation.” Hoarding essential goods and price gouging during a disaster permanently closes the doors of heaven. Anyone who has ever exploited an economic crisis, hoarded masks/medicine, or unfairly inflated prices for desperate buyers must immediately halt this demonic greed. To desperately attempt to mitigate this apocalyptic debt, they must donate their ill-gotten wealth to establish free soup kitchens (Rong Daan), massively fund food banks, and offer abundant, high-quality food to the Sangha. Only by actively saving others from starvation can they hope to slightly dilute the terrifying hunger waiting for them in the afterlife.
