Executive Summary: Karma of Stealing from Donation Boxes and Temple Funds

A case study from the Dream in Dream Kindergarten exposing the apocalyptic doom of stealing sacred wealth. Embezzling temple funds, stealing from donation boxes, or misusing monastic property guarantees the perpetrator will be sliced apart in hell, reborn as an excrement-eating Preta, and cursed with absolute financial ruin in every human lifetime.

1. The Plunderer of Faith

In a past life, this man served as a trusted temple committee member (Makkanayok), managing the financial affairs of a prominent monastery. However, his heart was deeply corrupted by greed. Seeing the massive influx of donations from devoted villagers, he began to secretly “Steal Cash from the Donation Boxes.” He further escalated his crimes by cooking the temple’s books, “Embezzling Massive Funds Intended for Building the Shrine Hall,” and using the sacred money to fund his own luxurious lifestyle. Stealing money that was purely intended as an offering to the Triple Gem (Sanghika Dana) is millions of times more karmically severe than stealing from an ordinary person, because the thief is simultaneously stealing from the collective merit of thousands of devotees.

2. The Retribution of Karma

  • The 2nd Major Hell (Kalasutta Naraka): The instant he died, his heavy sins dragged his soul straight into Kalasutta Naraka. Hell wardens used blazing, red-hot iron threads to mark his body, and then slowly sliced him into pieces with hellish chainsaws. As he screamed in absolute agony, he was forced to swallow glowing, molten iron balls—the exact cosmic penalty for swallowing the temple’s sacred wealth. This torture lasted for millions of eons.
  • The Excrement-Eating Hungry Ghost (Preta): Upon escaping hell, his residual greed forced him into the Preta Realm. He was born as a terrifying Hungry Ghost with hands and a mouth permanently engulfed in flames. He suffered from maddening, unquenchable starvation, and the only substance he could consume to survive was “Rotting Feces and Putrid Pus.”
  • Absolute Financial Ruin (The Midas Curse of Ashes): When the karma eventually permits a human rebirth, he is cursed with absolute financial destruction. He will be born into devastating poverty. Even if he tries to build a business, the “Curse of the Sacred Theft” guarantees that “Everything He Touches Turns to Ashes.” His businesses will burn down, he will be ruthlessly scammed, and he will never be able to hold onto any wealth.

3. Spiritual Solutions

Luang Por Dhammajayo issues an uncompromising warning: “Taking even a single penny or a blade of grass from a temple without permission is purchasing a direct ticket to the deepest hells.” Embezzling temple funds brings a catastrophic, radioactive curse upon one’s entire bloodline. Anyone who has ever stolen from a donation box, taken temple property home, or mismanaged monastic funds must urgently perform “Chamra Ni Song” (Paying Monastic Debts). They must calculate the value of what was taken, multiply it significantly, and donate it back to the temple immediately. They must fiercely observe the 2nd Precept and dedicate their lives to protecting the Dhamma, desperately praying that this act of supreme honesty will extinguish the flames on their hands in the afterlife.
