Case Study: Karma of Abandoning Elderly Parents in Hospitals or Streets

1. The Betrayer of Life

In a past life, this man was financially successful but possessed a deeply selfish, ungrateful (Akatannu) heart. When his parents reached old age, developed chronic illnesses, and could no longer care for themselves, he viewed the very people who gave him life as a “Disgusting Burden.” Instead of nursing them with gratitude, he drove them to a crowded public hospital, checked them into the emergency room, and “Secretly Abandoned Them There.” He changed his phone number, moved away, and refused to pay their medical bills. On other occasions, he dumped them at remote temples. He callously left his parents to weep in absolute heartbreak, terror, and confusion, dying completely alone. Abandoning the “Arahants of the Home” (parents) is practically equivalent to an Anantariya Karma (the gravest of sins); it completely annihilates the perpetrator’s karmic foundation.

2. The Retribution of Karma

• The 6th Major Hell (Tapana Naraka): The instant he died, his monstrous ungratefulness dragged his soul straight into Tapana Naraka. Monstrous hell wardens impaled him on red-hot iron spikes engulfed in roaring flames. He writhed in excruciating agony, screaming and begging for someone to save him, but he was completely ignored and abandoned in the sea of fire. He suffered this absolute, isolated torture for millions of eons, paying for the broken hearts of his parents.
• Severe Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia: When the karma permits a human rebirth, the curse of abandoning his roots actively destroys his brain. In his twilight years, he is karmically guaranteed to suffer from “Severe Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia.” He will completely lose his memory, forget who his family is, and lose control of his bodily functions. He will live in a state of perpetual, terrifying confusion, becoming a prisoner in his own mind.
• Wandering Lost and Dying as an Unclaimed Corpse: The karmic wheel executes flawless poetic justice. Just as he abandoned his parents, his own children will abandon him. Due to his dementia, he will “Wander Away from Home, Get Hopelessly Lost on the Streets, and Forget How to Return.” He will wander the streets cold, hungry, and terrified. Ultimately, he will “Die Completely Alone on the Streets, and No One Will Claim His Corpse,” mirroring the exact heartbreaking abandonment he inflicted on his parents.

3. Spiritual Solutions

Luang Por Dhammajayo issues an apocalyptic warning: “He who abandons his parents to die alone is reserving a VIP ticket to die alone in hell.” Abandoning one’s parents completely destroys all avenues for future success and guarantees a horrific old age. Anyone who currently neglects their parents, treats them with disgust, or has abandoned them must immediately rush back, beg for their forgiveness, and nurse them with absolute devotion. Flawlessly observe the 5 Precepts. If the parents have passed, the perpetrator must aggressively “Donate to Nursing Homes, Sponsor Elderly Orphans, and Dedicate All Merits to Their Parents.” Only by actively becoming a shelter for the abandoned elderly can they hope to slightly mitigate the terrifying loneliness waiting for them at the end of their lives.
