In many modern mindfulness practices, students are taught to focus on the breath at the tip of the nose or observe thoughts passing across the screen of the mind. While helpful, many practitioners eventually hit a plateau where the mind remains restless or dry.
Ancient Buddhist meditation masters discovered a profound secret: the human mind possesses a natural, anatomical home where it effortlessly settles down into profound peace—The Center of the Body (The 7th Base of the Mind).
“Just as a bird returns to its nest at sunset, the wandering mind returns to the center of the body to find true rest.”
Where is the Center of the Body?
To locate this point easily:
- Imagine a fine silk thread drawn horizontally from your navel straight through to your back.
- Imagine another thread drawn horizontally from your right waist to your left waist.
- Where these two threads intersect is the geometric center of your abdomen.
- From that intersection, measure the width of two fingers upward.
This point—roughly in the middle of your stomach area—is known as the 7th base of the mind. It is the natural resting point of consciousness, free from emotional agitation.
The Technique: Visualizing the Pure Crystal Sphere
Once you are comfortably seated and relaxed, gently place your mind at this center point. Do not strain or look down with your physical eyeballs. Simply feel as though you are observing from within.
Softly visualize an object of purity at the center:
- A clear, shining crystal sphere (like a dewdrop on a lotus leaf)
- The gentle radiance of a full moon
- Or simply a warm, comforting point of pure golden light
Key Monastic Insight: The “Feather” Principle
The most crucial secret to this meditation is effortlessness. Do not force the crystal sphere into existence. Imagine the image as gently as a bird’s feather resting on the surface of a still pond. If the image fades, do not be disappointed. Maintain the feeling of comfort and peace at your center, and the clarity will arise naturally.
