In the Maha-Narada-Kassapa Jataka (Jataka No. 544), preserved in the Pali Canon, the Buddha reveals a remarkable past-life memory of his chief attendant, Venerable Ananda. 1. The Goldsmith of Rajagaha: A Single Lifetime of Heedlessness
Many eons ago, in the ancient city of Rajagaha, the soul that would eventually become Venerable Ananda was born as a handsome, wealthy youth named Sumukha, the son of a master goldsmith. Blessed with wealth, charm, and status, he lived a life of luxury.
However, blinded by youth and vanity, he became heedless of moral law. He broke the Third Precept (Kamesu Micchacara) repeatedly, engaging in secret affairs with the wives of other men. Because he faced no immediate legal punishment, he assumed his actions carried no consequences. He was dangerously mistaken.
2. The 7 Stages of Karmic Retribution (Jataka No. 544)
When Sumukha died, the heavy unwholesome karma of adultery manifested immediately. As recorded in Princess Ruja’s recollection in Jataka 544, his consciousness underwent a grueling sequence of karmic purgings across multiple realms:
- 140,000 Years in Roruva Hell: Upon death, he plunged directly into Roruva Niraya (the Hell of Roaring Agony), enduring intense mental and physical torment for 140,000 years until the primary weight of the bad karma was spent.
- Rebirth as a Castrated Donkey: Emerging from hell, the residual karma forced rebirth as a donkey in Benares. At birth, his testicles were castrated so he could be used for agonizing heavy labor.

- Rebirth as a Female Slave: Next, he was born as a female slave in a impoverished household, experiencing the vulnerability, servitude, and lack of freedom common to lower-class women of that era.
- Rebirth as Princess Ruja: Finally, after eons of suffering, the negative karma was exhausted. The remaining merit of past good deeds bore fruit, and she was born as Princess Ruja, the virtuous daughter of King Angati. She possessed the gift of remembering her past lives and devoted her life to virtue and the Eight Precepts.
3. The Final Spiritual Victory: From Princess Ruja to Venerable Ananda
After her life as Princess Ruja, her deep dedication to morality (Sila) and meditation led to rebirth as a celestial maiden in Tavatimsa Heaven. Centuries later, during the time of Shakyamuni Buddha, that same soul took birth as Prince Ananda of the Sakyan royal clan.
As Venerable Ananda, he became the Buddha’s personal attendant, memorized all 84,000 teachings of the Dhamma, and ultimately attained full Arahantship—proving that no karmic debt is permanent, and every soul can rise from the darkest hells to supreme enlightenment.
