From the teaching series “Inner Dreams Kindergarten” by Luang Por Dhammajayo (Wat Phra Dhammakaya) — Exploring the profound reality of human existence through real-life case studies on the Law of Karma.
1. The Background: Sudden Facial Distortion and Social Mortification
Bell’s Palsy, or acute unilateral facial nerve paralysis, is clinically diagnosed as an inflammation of the seventh cranial nerve governing facial expression. Yet in countless clinical scenarios, individuals in robust health awaken abruptly with one side of their mouth drooping, saliva leaking involuntarily, and their smile contorted into a grotesque grimace. Despite protracted pharmacological and physical therapy, symmetry frequently remains permanently compromised.
In this case study, a devotee consulted Luang Por Dhammajayo regarding her abrupt affliction. One morning, she awakened to find the corner of her mouth paralyzed, her speech slurred, and her facial expression disfigured. The condition inflicted deep emotional sorrow and social humiliation. She sought to uncover the specific spiritual cause behind this sudden disfigurement and learn how to resolve it according to Buddhist wisdom.
2. Luang Por’s Insight: Mocking the Afflicted and Disrespecting Parents
Luang Por Dhammajayo revealed that facial anatomy—especially the mouth, lips, and tongue—acts as the primary receptor for verbal karma (Vacikamma):
“In a past lifetime, this individual possessed a reckless, sharp tongue, frequently mimicking and mocking the physical deformities of others for collective amusement. Even more critically, during heated arguments with parents and virtuous spiritual practitioners, she routinely retorted with fiery insolence, scoffing and curling her mouth in contemptuous disdain toward her mother and father.”
Mocking the misfortunes of others and treating parents with contorted disrespect generates an exact karmic mirror in human physiology:
- Cranial Nerve Inflammation and Facial Distortion: The contorted facial expressions once made in contempt toward parents and the mockery aimed at disabled individuals were indelibly recorded. When this demeritorious imprint matured, it triggered acute neurological inflammation, locking the facial muscles in the exact contorted posture once displayed.
- Speech Impairment and Involuntary Drooling: The karmic fruit of insolence toward elders, depriving the tongue and lips of motor control and subjecting the individual to physical frustration.
- Social Humiliation: Enduring the exact emotional embarrassment and self-consciousness she once inflicted upon others through mockery.
3. Spiritual Remedies for Restoration and Healing
Luang Por provided actionable guidance to dissolve verbal debts and promote anatomical healing:
- Seek Formal Forgiveness from Parents and the Triple Gem: Present offerings and prostrate before parents, sincerely requesting forgiveness for all past disrespect. If parents have passed away, prostrate before the Buddha image, mentally visualizing parents and offering heartfelt apologies.
- Uphold the Fourth Precept Impeccably: Completely refrain from mocking others’ flaws, ridiculing deformities, or engaging in sarcastic put-downs.
- Chant Sacred Parittas Daily: Utilize the vocal faculties to chant verses venerating the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha. The sacred acoustic resonance cleanses facial energy channels, relaxes stressed nerves, and accelerates physical rehabilitation.
- Apply Gold Leaf to Buddha Statues: Participate in casting Buddha statues and applying pure gold leaf to the sacred face and lips of the Buddha. This high merit generates radiant facial beauty, flawless physical features, and charismatic speech across future existences.
Canonical Tipitaka References
- Cula-kammavibhanga Sutta, Majjhima Nikaya (MN 135): The Buddha taught that anger, resentment, and failing to show reverence to worthy elders results in rebirth with an unattractive complexion, harsh features, and physical disfigurements.
- Petavatthu Commentary (Story of Mukha-peta): Canonical scriptures recording the suffering of the Mouth-distorted Ghost whose facial features were contorted with worms emerging from the mouth, having used speech to revile pure-hearted Buddhist monastics in a past life.
