From the teaching series \”Inner Dreams Kindergarten\” by Luang Por Dhammajayo (Wat Phra Dhammakaya) — Exploring the profound reality of human existence through real-life case studies on the Law of Karma.

1. The Background: Great Wealth Built on the Tears of Impoverished Debtors

This dramatic case study examines the life of a wealthy businesswoman who accumulated a vast fortune through predatory moneylending. Holding hundreds of land deeds, luxury mansions, and substantial financial reserves, her primary enterprise revolved around high-interest loans collateralized against the homes and agricultural plots of destitute villagers.

Whenever impoverished borrowers defaulted or fell behind on exorbitant interest payments, she deployed ruthless debt collectors. Showing zero clemency, she evicted families from ancestral lands, seized their livestock, and forced destitute farmers into destitution. Yet in her advanced years, the Law of Karma manifested inexorably. She developed an excruciating gastrointestinal condition where her esophagus constricted, making swallowing food almost impossible. Emaciated to bare skin and bone, she suffered severe hallucinations, constantly screaming that deceased debtors were surrounding her bed to claim her life. Upon her agonizing death, her distraught children had distressing dreams about her post-mortem condition and consulted Luang Por Dhammajayo.

2. Luang Por’s Insight: The Karmic Retribution of Usury and Rebirth as a Tormented Peta (Ghost)

Luang Por Dhammajayo elucidated the precise distinction between past generosity and present unwholesome exploitation:

“Her monumental financial affluence in this lifetime was the legitimate harvest of extensive charitable donations in past births. Tragically, she misused her past blessings to engage in predatory usury, extortion, and unjust land seizures, devastating vulnerable families. The collective despair, hunger, and curses of ruined debtors generated an immensely heavy karmic debt. Upon her demise, her consciousness, weighed down by avarice and cruelty, plunged first into subterranean purgatory. Having endured hellish fire, the residual demerit of extortion propelled her into the realm of the Petas (tormented hungry ghosts). In that existence, she manifests as an emaciated ghost as tall as a palm tree, possessing a needle-thin throat. She suffers unceasing, ravenous hunger and thirst, yet can swallow neither water nor food, while searing red-hot iron plates crush her chest, mirroring the emotional suffocation she inflicted on impoverished families.”

The spiritual mechanics of predatory lending are categorized as follows:

  • Exorbitant Usury and Evictions: Caused rebirth as a needle-throated Peta, forever starving and devoid of shelter.
  • Terrorizing Debtors: Manifested as terrifying pre-mortem delusions, panic attacks, and severe physical constriction.
  • Depletion of Future Prosperity: The abuse of wealth rapidly extinguished her past merit, ensuring hundreds of future rebirths in absolute poverty.

3. Key Spiritual Lessons for Business Owners and Investors

This case delivers essential moral lessons for ethical commerce and financial management:

  1. Practice Right Livelihood (Samma Ajiva): Commerce and financial management must operate upon fairness, compassion, and transparency. Never construct personal wealth upon the destitution and tears of others.
  2. Practice Debt Forgiveness as Charity (Abhaya-Dana): When dealing with genuinely distressed debtors, offer grace, lower interest, or forgive debts as charitable offerings. The spiritual merit of releasing others from suffering brings boundless peace.
  3. Transfer Merit to Liberate Tormented Ancestors: Surviving descendants of moneylenders must dedicate major meritorious deeds—offering food to the Sangha, building Buddha statues, and practicing meditative stillness—specifically transferring the merits to release ancestors from the Peta realm.

Canonical Tipitaka References

  • Petavatthu, Khuddaka Nikaya (Pv 84): Canonical accounts of hungry ghosts who, in past human births, were crooked moneylenders, fraudulent judges, or extortionists, enduring needle-thin throats and burning bodily wounds across ages.
  • Dhammika Sutta, Sutta Nipata, Khuddaka Nikaya (Sn 380): The Buddha’s instructions to householders on acquiring wealth righteously without deception, violence, or exploitation, ensuring that wealth brings genuine happiness in this life and high rebirth in the next.

Easy but Deep EP.27: The Deceived Life — a teaching of Luang Por Dhammajayo, Wat Phra Dhammakaya that we must take the fully enlightened one as our standard, not those who do not truly know. Humans often believe the ignorant rather than the enlightened, and so our life is filled with suffering, molded by media to believe that sensory pleasures are happiness. But we can attain true happiness by stopping and being still, through the power of diligence and wisdom, seeking the Triple Gem within ourselves which leads to realizing Nibbana.
