From the teaching series \”Inner Dreams Kindergarten\” by Luang Por Dhammajayo (Wat Phra Dhammakaya) — Exploring the profound reality of human existence through real-life case studies on the Law of Karma.

1. The Background: Mysterious Dark Poison and Unexplained Torment

This enigmatic case study examines the occult phenomena of black magic, sorcery, and karmic vulnerability. The subject suddenly developed severe, debilitating physical afflictions. Their complexion darkened into a sickly, ashen hue, their physical frame deteriorated rapidly, and they suffered constant, agonizing internal burning sensations within the abdomen as if consumed by fire. Most disturbingly, they exhibited extreme psychological panic, paranoia, and violent convulsions whenever they heard Buddhist chanting or approached sacred shrines.

Comprehensive examinations by modern medical specialists—including blood panels, neurological scans, and endoscopic evaluations—revealed no pathological cause. Subsequently, a revered Buddhist master inspected the patient and identified the affliction as \”Ya-Sang\” (herbal sorcery poison) and black magic secretly administered by a commercial rival. Perplexed and terrified, the family consulted Luang Por Dhammajayo: Is black magic real, why was this patient susceptible to sorcery, and how can one be liberated through the power of the Buddha?

2. Luang Por’s Insight: Past Occult Practices and the Invulnerability of the Triple Gem

Luang Por Dhammajayo verified through spiritual vision that black magic exists as an unwholesome craft of wrong view (Miccha-Ditthi), but emphasized that sorcery cannot penetrate an individual unless past unwholesome karma opens the doorway:

“Black magic, occult curses, and sorcery poisons (Ya-Sang) are authentic phenomena in the mundane realm, operated through low-tier spirits, wrathful earthbound entities, and negative psychic energies. However, under cosmic law, occult sorcery can never harm an individual possessing intact spiritual protection unless past demerit creates an entry portal. In this case, the patient was afflicted because, in a past lifetime, they practiced as a sorcerer or black magic practitioner. In that past existence, they deployed poisoned charms, cursed potions, and necromancy to harm, subjugate, and destroy business adversaries. That latent occult demerit followed them into this lifetime. When confronted by present-day adversaries harboring malice, that ancient demerit aligned to allow the dark sorcery to penetrate their body. For those who cast black magic or hire sorcerers, upon death their souls plunge directly into the deepest hells, impaled endlessly upon molten poisoned spears across millions of years.”

The spiritual dynamics of occult vulnerability and protection are categorized as follows:

  • Karmic Vulnerability: Past participation in sorcery or black magic creates a psychic loophole, making one susceptible to occult attacks in future lives.
  • Psychosomatic Damage of Sorcery: Destabilizes bodily elemental balance (Dhatu), impairs the nervous system, and attracts malicious earthbound entities.
  • The Invincibility of the Triple Gem: The pure, luminous spiritual energy of the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha infinitely surpasses all occult magic, instantly neutralizing negative energies.

3. Key Spiritual Lessons for Protection and Healing

Luang Por outlined essential spiritual remedies to construct an impenetrable fortress against all forms of darkness:

  1. Sever All Involvement with the Occult: Completely discard dark amulets, black magic charms, and necromantic objects. Take refuge solely in the Triple Gem.
  2. Chant Sacred Protective Parittas (Paritta Suttas): Routinely chant the Ratana Sutta, Mangala Sutta, and Atanatiya Paritta. Consecrate clean water through chanting to drink as blessed water, purifying the internal system.
  3. Cultivate Daily Inner Stillness: Center awareness at the Seventh Base of the body (the center of the torso). Reaching inner stillness generates an aura of crystalline spiritual light that automatically deflects curses and negative energies.

Canonical Tipitaka References

  • Ratana Sutta, Khuddaka Patha, Khuddaka Nikaya (Khp 6): The sacred paritta recited by Venerable Ananda to dispel pestilence, famine, and malicious non-human spirits (Amanussa) from the ancient city of Vesali, restoring harmony and healing.
  • Atanatiya Sutta, Digha Nikaya (DN 32): The protective discourse delivered by King Vessavana to the Buddha, providing spiritual armor for Buddhist disciples against hostile spirits and practitioners of dark arts.
