From the teaching series \”Inner Dreams Kindergarten\” by Luang Por Dhammajayo (Wat Phra Dhammakaya) — Exploring the profound reality of human existence through real-life case studies on the Law of Karma.

1. The Background: Artistic Aestheticism, Love of Nature, and Dreams of Mythical Avians

This fascinating case study explores the subtle metaphysical realm of the Himavanta Forest and mythological demi-god entities known in canonical Buddhist cosmology as Kinnara and Kinnari. The subject was an artistic, gentle-mannered woman who possessed an extraordinary love for beauty, musical dances, nature, and majestic birds such as peacocks and swans. Concurrently, she was generous and devout, frequently offering fragrant flowers, lamps, and financial support for Buddhist monastery construction, yet her mind remained deeply infatuated with sensory aestheticism and avian grace.

Following her peaceful passing in elder years, her children and close relatives experienced vivid dreams of her transformed into an ethereal creature: her upper body was that of a radiantly beautiful celestial nymph adorned with sparkling jewels, while her lower body possessed magnificent, iridescent wings and tail feathers. In these visions, she soared gracefully over crystalline streams, blossoming lotus ponds, and aromatic forest canopies in the Himavanta. Her children consulted Luang Por Dhammajayo: Is the mythical Himavanta Forest real, and why did their mother take rebirth as a Kinnari?

2. Luang Por’s Insight: The Himavanta Realm in Catummaharajika and Kinnari Rebirth

Luang Por Dhammajayo verified through spiritual vision that the Himavanta Forest exists as an authentic subtle dimension within the First Heaven of Catummaharajika:

“The Himavanta Forest and Kinnari entities exist as genuine subtle dimensions intersecting the subtle planes of Catummaharajika. Her rebirth as a ‘Kinnari’ arose from performing merits through offerings of fragrances, flowers, and sacred dances, intertwined with a strong psychological attachment and longing for avian elegance, nature, and physical beauty. Upon physical death, this combination of spiritual merit and sensory attachment propelled her subtle body to take spontaneous rebirth (Opapatika) as a Kinnari. Endowed with an exquisite human torso and luminous celestial wings, she possesses the power of flight and melodic song, nourished by celestial fruits and divine waters in the enchanted mountains of Himavanta. While enjoying celestial lifespans spanning hundreds of deva years, this realm remains within the lower heavenly sphere where sensual desires and playful attachments still persist.”

The spiritual principles governing Kinnari rebirth are categorized as follows:

  • Karmic Causes of Kinnari Rebirth: Performing generous offerings of flowers and music while entertaining passionate attachments to nature and bird imagery.
  • Physical Attributes of Kinnari: Divine human upper body combined with celestial avian wings and plumage, capable of rapid flight and divine melodies.
  • Habitat of the Himavanta: Inhabiting subtle valleys, lotus lakes, and aromatic celestial groves within the Catummaharajika realm.

3. Key Spiritual Lessons for Directing the Mind in Charity

This case delivers essential guidance on formulating wholesome spiritual aspirations:

  1. Direct Charitable Aspirations Toward Ultimate Liberation: When offering flowers, perfumes, and alms, consciously dedicate the merit toward attaining Nirvana and the Tusita Heaven, rather than mundane aesthetic realms.
  2. Transcend Attachment to Physical Beauty: Contemplate the impermanence of the physical form to prevent subtle desires from diverting consciousness to lower astral planes.
  3. Cultivate Meditation to Attain the Inner Dhammakaya: Practice daily meditation at the Seventh Base of the body (the center of the torso), elevating consciousness beyond celestial sensory playgrounds into the supreme stillness of Dhamma.
