Executive Summary: Nettle Itch Skin Prank

A revealing karmic case study from the Dream in Dream Kindergarten Wisdom School, taught by Ven. Luang Por Dhammajayo. This account uncovers the karmic consequences of a seemingly harmless past-life prank—scattering itchy cowhage (nettle/itching powder) on others. This act of thoughtless cruelty (Vihimsa) ripened into a chronic, incurable skin disease in the present life, illustrating the strict law of karma alongside Theravada Tipitaka teachings.

1. The Karmic Root: Cruel Pranks and Lack of Empathy

Not all physical suffering stems from direct killing (Panatipata); much of it arises from Vihimsa Kamma (the karma of harming or harassing others). In a past life, this individual had a playful but highly mischievous personality, entirely lacking empathy (Karuna) for the discomfort of others.

Their primary misdeed involved secretly dusting “Mucuna pruriens” (cowhage/itching powder) or toxic sap onto the clothes, beds, and bodies of friends and animals. They found immense amusement in watching their victims writhe, scratch, and suffer in burning agony. Although there was no intent to kill, the deliberate intention to inflict physical suffering and humiliation was recorded deeply in their karmic continuum.

2. The Karmic Fruition: Chronic Skin Inflammation

When this unwholesome karma matured in the present lifetime, it manifested as a relentless, distressing dermatological condition:

  • Chronic Itching and Burning Skin: Experiencing a persistent, maddening itch and burning sensation all over the body, exactly replicating the feeling of being covered in itching powder.
  • Resistance to Medical Treatment: Despite consulting top dermatologists and applying various medications, the condition remained chronic because its root cause was “Kamma-samutthana” (disease originating from karma), not merely physical pathogens.
  • Loss of Confidence and Social Anxiety: The constant scratching led to scarred, inflamed skin, causing profound embarrassment in public—a direct reflection of the humiliation they once inflicted on others.

3. Theravada Canonical Tipitaka References

The Buddha warned against underestimating the consequences of even minor unwholesome acts of harassment:

Cula-kammavibhanga Sutta (Majjhima Nikaya 135)

“Here, student, some man or woman is one who harms beings… Because of performing and undertaking such action, upon the dissolution of the body, they are reborn in a state of deprivation. If they come back to the human state, they are sickly and afflicted with many diseases.”

Papavagga, Khuddaka Nikaya Dhammapada (Verse 121): “Do not think lightly of evil, saying, ‘It will not come to me.’ Drop by drop is the water pot filled. Likewise, the fool, gathering it little by little, fills himself with evil.”

4. Karmic Remedies and Wholesome Adjustments

To alleviate the physical symptoms and dissolve the karmic blueprint, Luang Por Dhammajayo recommended specific wholesome practices:

  1. Offering Dermatological Medicines: Donating skin ointments, medicated soaps, and healthcare supplies to monastic communities and impoverished patients to generate the merit of a healthy complexion.
  2. Cleaning Sacred Sanctuaries: Sweeping and washing temple grounds, restrooms, and pagodas. This specific physical merit purifies the skin and clears the mind of impurities.
  3. Radiating Loving-Kindness (Metta): Practicing Metta meditation to send sincere apologies and goodwill to all beings harmed in the past, accompanied by a strict vow never to engage in cruel pranks again.
