Executive Summary: Smoking Karma

A sobering karmic case study from the Dream in Dream Kindergarten Wisdom School, taught by Ven. Luang Por Dhammajayo. This case details the spiritual consequences of smoking and substance addiction, revealing that the damage extends far beyond lung cancer in this life, culminating in the excruciating “Hell of Hot Ashes” in the afterlife.

1. The Spiritual Cost of Smoke

While many view smoking as a personal choice or a stress reliever, the Law of Karma categorizes it as an act of self-harm and indirect harm to others (second-hand smoke). It violates the spirit of the 1st Precept (harming life) and directly falls under the 5th Precept, which forbids the intake of addictive substances that cloud mindfulness and damage the body.

In a past life, the subject of this case recklessly burned forests and brush, causing countless small animals to choke and die in the smoke. Combined with heavy chain-smoking for decades in their present life, this compounded karma magnetized severe respiratory diseases.

2. Present Retribution and the Hell of Hot Ashes

The karmic payback for smoking manifests brutally in both the human realm and the afterlife:

  • Present-Life Karma: Years of inhaling toxic smoke resulted in emphysema and lung cancer. The subject suffered immensely before death, gasping for air and feeling as though they were drowning on dry land—a direct reflection of the suffering they caused animals in past fires.
  • The Hell of Hot Ashes (Ussada Naraka): Upon death, individuals addicted to smoking fall into a satellite hell of the 5th Major Hell. In this realm, the sky rains burning ash, and hell wardens force the denizens to inhale scorching, toxic smoke. They choke, burn from the inside out, and die in agony, only to instantly regenerate and repeat the torture for eons.

3. Theravada Canonical Tipitaka References

The Buddha warned against the consumption of intoxicants and addictive substances that lead to ruin and suffering:

Sigalovada Sutta (The Six Channels for Dissipating Wealth)

“Young man, there are these six evil consequences in indulging in intoxicants which cause infatuation and heedlessness: loss of wealth, increase of quarrels, susceptibility to disease, earning an evil reputation, shameless exposure of body, and weakening of intellect.”

Mahanaradakassapa Jataka: This text describes various hell realms, including those filled with suffocating smoke and scorching ashes, reserved for those who lived heedlessly and harmed others.

4. Solutions and Spiritual Rehabilitation

Luang Por Dhammajayo offered a definitive path to break free from this destructive karmic cycle:

  1. Quit Cold Turkey: The most crucial step is to gather immense willpower and quit smoking immediately (“Cold Turkey”). Throw away all cigarettes and lighters without regret. This decisive action cuts the energetic cord tying the soul to the Hell of Hot Ashes.
  2. Meditation as a Substitute: When cravings arise, instead of reaching for a cigarette, close your eyes and meditate. Visualize a bright, clear crystal sphere at the center of the body. The inner joy (Piti) and brightness from meditation will naturally suppress the physical cravings.
  3. Dedicate Restorative Merit: Perform merits that sustain life—such as releasing animals destined for slaughter or donating medicines to monks. Dedicate this merit to the animals harmed by smoke in past lives and to any humans affected by one’s second-hand smoke, asking for their forgiveness to lighten the karmic load.
