Executive Summary: Infidelity Karma
A stern karmic case study from the Dream in Dream Kindergarten Wisdom School, taught by Ven. Luang Por Dhammajayo. This account serves as a strict warning against adultery, promiscuity, and keeping secret lovers. Violating the 3rd Precept (Sexual Misconduct) destroys families in the present and guarantees a horrific descent into the 3rd Major Hell.
1. Temporary Pleasure, Eternal Scars
Fidelity is the foundation of a marriage. When a spouse engages in romantic or sexual relationships outside the marriage, they are committing a severe violation of the 3rd Precept (Kamesu Micchacara). This act allows uncontrolled lust (Raga) to overpower morality, leading to the profound betrayal and emotional destruction of their life partner and children.
The tears, heartbreak, and resentment of the betrayed family members generate a suffocating dark karmic cloud. This dark energy attaches to the cheater’s spirit, ensuring that their pursuit of illicit pleasure ultimately yields only misery and instability.
2. The Karmic Backlash of the Unfaithful
Those who indulge in infidelity face severe and degrading karmic consequences:
- Family Ruin and Disease: In this lifetime, their families will shatter. Their children will disrespect them, and their twilight years will be spent in lonely isolation. Furthermore, they are highly susceptible to contracting severe, incurable sexually transmitted diseases or reproductive cancers.
- The Third Major Hell (Simbali Naraka): Upon death, the astral body plunges into the 3rd Major Hell. Here, hell wardens force the adulterers to climb the terrifying “Iron Kapok Trees,” which are covered in giant, red-hot iron thorns. As they climb, wardens pierce them with spears; upon reaching the top, demonic birds tear at their flesh; and when they fall, hell-hounds devour them. This repeats for eons.
- Degraded Rebirths: After escaping hell, they spend lifetimes as animals that are castrated or live in constant mating frenzies (like stray dogs). When finally reborn as humans, this karma often causes them to be born as transgender individuals (who often face societal prejudice), prostitutes, or individuals who are repeatedly raped, heartbroken, and betrayed in love.
3. Theravada Canonical Tipitaka References
The Buddha warned of the destructive nature of lust and the ruin it brings:
Parabhava Sutta (Khuddaka Nikaya, Sutta Nipata)
“Not being contented with one’s own wife, and being seen with prostitutes or the wives of others—this is a cause of one’s downfall… Whoever commits sexual misconduct, that person goes to a state of deprivation.”
4. Spiritual Solutions and Cutting the Karma
For those who have strayed but wish to avoid this dark destiny, Luang Por Dhammajayo advised absolute and immediate correction:
- Absolute Severance: The cheating must stop immediately. Cut off all contact with the illicit partner without hesitation or lingering attachment. Return to being completely loyal to your spouse.
- Observe the 8 Precepts (Uposatha Sila): On Buddhist holy days, observe the 8 Precepts (which demand complete celibacy) or attend meditation retreats. Practicing “Nekkhamma” (renunciation of sensuality) actively cleanses the mind of its obsession with lust.
- Beg for Forgiveness (Ahosi Kamma): Dedicate all merit from giving, morality, and meditation specifically to the spouse and children who were hurt. Mentally beg for their complete forgiveness to untie the karmic knot of betrayal.
