Executive Summary: Treason Karma

A profound karmic case study from the Dream in Dream Kindergarten Wisdom School, taught by Ven. Luang Por Dhammajayo. This account delves into the severe karmic consequences of treason or “selling out one’s nation.” Considered the ultimate act of ingratitude toward the land that provided shelter and life, it results in a devastating karmic backlash, leading to a tragic end and the deepest hell.

1. The Ultimate Act of Ingratitude

A nation or homeland is like a great sheltering tree that provides safety, resources, and a place to live from birth until death. When an individual sells national secrets to an enemy, collaborates with malicious forces to destroy the country, or incites war purely for personal wealth or power, they commit extreme ingratitude (Akatannu).

Such actions cause widespread suffering for the entire population. People lose their homes, families are torn apart, and lives are lost to war or chaos. The collective sorrow and curses of an entire nation amalgamate into an overwhelmingly massive, dark karmic force that inevitably crushes the traitor.

2. The Karma of Having No Land to Stand On

Those who commit treason must face agonizing and enduring consequences:

  • A Dishonorable End: In this lifetime, the wealth or power gained through betrayal is short-lived. Traitors are almost always betrayed by their own accomplices or chased out by the people. They become fugitives, possessing no land to call home, and typically meet a violent or unnatural death (assassination or execution).
  • Swallowed by the Earth (Avici Hell): Upon death, the very earth rejects their body. The astral form is instantly sucked down into the Avici Hell (the deepest realm). There, they are incinerated by hellfire and crushed continuously by red-hot iron mountains, suffering for an entire kappa (eon)—a punishment far longer than for ordinary crimes.
  • Rebirth as the Stateless: Once they eventually escape hell, they will be reborn as stateless refugees, constantly fleeing war and persecution. They will possess no homeland, or they will be reborn as low-tier animals constantly hunted without a safe haven.

3. Theravada Canonical Tipitaka References

The Buddha taught that gratitude is the hallmark of a good person, and destroying one’s benefactors brings absolute ruin:

Katannukatavedi Sutta (Anguttara Nikaya)

“Monks, two people are hard to find in the world. Which two? The one who is first to do a kindness (Pubbakari), and the one who is grateful and thankful for a kindness done (Katannukatavedi)… The nation and homeland are supreme benefactors. Whoever destroys their benefactor cannot find prosperity.”

4. Spiritual Solutions and Mitigation

For those who have harbored such thoughts or engaged in actions detrimental to their country, Luang Por Dhammajayo advised an urgent reversal:

  1. Immediate Halting: Completely withdraw from any conspiracy or behavior that undermines the nation immediately. Shift all efforts toward serving the public good.
  2. Merit to Redeem the Nation: Dedicate oneself to massive social work. Donate wealth to build public hospitals, schools, and infrastructure to compensate for the damage caused to the people.
  3. Support the Buddhist Religion: Protecting and firmly establishing Buddhism in the land is considered creating the strongest protective shield for a nation. This massive merit helps dilute the heavy karma of ingratitude.
