Executive Summary: Merit of Forgiving Enemies and Letting Go of Grudges

A case study from the Dream in Dream Kindergarten revealing the ultimate merit of spiritual liberation. Actively practicing forgiveness (Abhaya Dana) and completely releasing all hatred towards enemies guarantees the donor absolute inner peace, zero karmic creditors, and rapid spiritual enlightenment.

1. The Breaker of Karmic Chains

During his lifetime, this man experienced a devastating betrayal; his closest friend and business partner ruthlessly cheated him, leaving him completely bankrupt. Initially, he was consumed by a burning, venomous hatred and meticulously plotted severe revenge. However, after attending a meditation retreat and studying the Buddha’s teachings on the cycle of karma, he realized that revenge was simply drinking poison and expecting the enemy to die. Exercising immense spiritual strength, he made the profound decision to grant “Absolute Forgiveness” (Abhaya Dana). He completely extinguished his hatred, erased all grudges from his heart, and refused to seek revenge. Conquering one’s own raging anger to forgive an enemy is the most difficult form of charity to execute, but it yields the purest, most highly concentrated merit because it permanently breaks the vicious cycle of karmic retaliation.

2. The Blessings of Absolute Forgiveness

  • Zero Enemies and Karmic Creditors: When reborn as a human, the karmic merit of severing the cycle of revenge dictates that he will be born into a completely safe, harmonious environment. He will possess “Absolutely Zero Enemies or Karmic Creditors.” No one will ever harbor malicious intent toward him, and he will be perfectly shielded from betrayal, violence, and targeted disasters for his entire life.
  • Ultimate, Unshakable Inner Peace: Because he extinguished the fire of anger in his past life, his mind in this life will be biologically wired for “Ultimate Tranquility.” He will possess a profoundly peaceful, joyful, and stress-free disposition. No matter how chaotic or toxic the external world becomes, his inner sanctuary will remain completely unbothered and radiant with Metta (Loving-kindness).
  • Rapid Attainment of High-Level Enlightenment: Forgiveness is the master key to Nirvana. When he sits down to meditate, his mind—completely free of the heavy, dark anchor of hatred (Vyapada Nivaraṇa)—will effortlessly unify and plunge into deep concentration. He will effortlessly bypass mental blockages and attain the radiant inner Dhammakaya with astonishing, unparalleled speed.

3. Spiritual Solutions

Luang Por Dhammajayo issues a profound teaching: “Hatred is never appeased by hatred in this world; by non-hatred alone is hatred appeased.” Holding a grudge is a heavy iron chain locking you to your enemy across lifetimes; if you do not forgive, you are doomed to be reborn to suffer with them again. Anyone currently burdened by intense anger, deeply traumatized by betrayal, or burning with a desire for revenge, must aggressively practice meditation and force themselves to grant “Abhaya Dana” (Forgiveness). They must let go of the pain and radiate loving-kindness to their betrayers. Doing so instantly shatters the chains of bad karma, permanently liberating their destiny and securing an extraordinarily peaceful future.
