Executive Summary: Slander Karma
A stern karmic case study from the Dream in Dream Kindergarten Wisdom School, taught by Ven. Luang Por Dhammajayo. This account warns against the hidden destructive power of malicious gossip and slander. Framing innocent people or destroying their reputation via false speech violates the 4th Precept, leading to severe karmic retribution in the 4th Major Hell.
1. The Invisible Sword of Poisoned Words
Speech wields immense power. Fabricating lies or spreading false rumors to cause someone to lose their job, reputation, or social standing is a complete violation of the 4th Precept (Musavada and Pisunavaca – false and malicious speech). While the speaker might do it out of jealousy, malice, or even for fun, the damage inflicted on the victim is profound.
Every time a lie is passed on, the resulting despair, anger, and humiliation felt by the innocent victim accumulate into a dense, dark karmic energy. This energy silently flows back to erode the slanderer’s own spirit and future.
2. The Karmic Backlash of the Slanderer
Those who habitually destroy others with lies must face inescapable consequences:
- Social Ruin and Disease: In this lifetime, their karma often manifests physically as severe oral diseases—chronic foul breath, tooth loss, or oral cancer. Eventually, the karma will rebound: they will be brutally betrayed, falsely accused of severe crimes, or face sudden, humiliating ruin in their career.
- The Fourth Major Hell (Roruva Naraka): Upon death, the astral body is dragged into the 4th Major Hell, the realm for liars. Hell wardens use red-hot iron tongs to pull out the victim’s tongue and chop it with demonic blades, or pour boiling copper acid down their throats. They scream in agony (the defining characteristic of this hell) for eons.
- Deformed Rebirths: After escaping hell, they are reborn as animals that consume filth or possess foul odors (e.g., maggots, vultures). When eventually reborn as humans, they often suffer from cleft lips, speech impediments, or are born mute.
3. Theravada Canonical Tipitaka References
The Buddha frequently warned that an unbridled tongue is a weapon that destroys the speaker:
Kokalika Sutta (Samyutta Nikaya)
“When a person is born, an axe is born inside their mouth. A fool cuts himself with this axe whenever he speaks evil… Whoever praises the blameworthy or blames the praiseworthy stores up misfortune with their mouth.”
The Story of Cinca Manavika: A woman who falsely accused the Buddha of impregnating her. Her karma ripened instantly, and the earth swallowed her alive, plunging her directly into the Avici Hell.
4. Spiritual Solutions and Mitigation
For those who have used their speech to harm others, Luang Por Dhammajayo advised a strict path to dilute the karma:
- Confess and Clear the Name: If the damage is ongoing, one must have the courage to confess the truth publicly, clear the innocent person’s name, and directly beg for their forgiveness.
- Vow of Right Speech (Samma Vaca): Take a lifelong vow to strictly observe Right Speech—abstaining completely from lying, malicious gossip, harsh words, and frivolous chatter.
- Chant and Meditate: Use the mouth that once created sin to chant the virtues of the Triple Gem daily. Meditate and specifically dedicate the merit to the victims of your slander, sincerely begging for their Ahosi Kamma (karmic pardon).
