1. The Light that Guides Life and the Dhamma
Darkness is a fundamental obstacle to sight and progress. Offering lamps, light bulbs, lanterns, or even sponsoring a temple’s electricity bill provides essential illumination for monks to study the Dhamma, chant, and practice meditation comfortably during the night. It represents the dispelling of ignorance and the opening of the path to wisdom.
The subject of this case study cherished brightness and clarity. They consistently sponsored high-quality light bulbs for temple halls, offered candles during the Rains Retreat, and happily paid the temple’s utility bills, possessing a deep wish for the light of Buddhism to shine across the entire world.
2. The Blessings of the Divine Eye and Sharp Intellect
The karmic return for offering light equipment yields spectacular results concerning vision and intellect:
- Flawless and Beautiful Eyesight: In this lifetime and future ones, the donor will possess beautiful, bright eyes (often compared to the clear eyes of a young deer). Their vision will be flawless—never suffering from blindness, cataracts, or severe degradation—and they will be able to see clearly even in low-light conditions.
- Attainment of the Divine Eye (Dibbacakkhu): This specific merit strongly supports meditation. It makes it incredibly easy for the practitioner to attain the “Divine Eye” (clairvoyance), allowing them to perceive inner brightness, subtle bodies, and other realms clearly and accurately.
- Sharp Wisdom and Problem Solving: They will possess a sharp, illuminating intellect. When faced with life’s “darkest” moments or complex problems, they will always find a “way out.” A guiding light of wisdom will always help them overcome obstacles easily.
- Luminous Celestial Mansions: Upon passing, their astral body will be exceptionally bright, radiating an aura far superior to average deities. They will reside in brilliantly illuminated celestial mansions in the heavenly realms.

The Buddha highlighted that offering light is the direct cause for obtaining supreme vision and wisdom:
The Story of Anuruddha Thera (Khuddaka Nikaya, Apadana)
Venerable Anuruddha, who was declared by the Buddha as the foremost monk in possessing the “Divine Eye,” recounted his past karma. In a previous life, he lit thousands of lamps to worship the Buddha’s Stupa. Through that merit, he was reborn in brilliantly lit heavenly mansions and, in his final life, attained Arahantship along with the supreme clairvoyant knowledge capable of seeing thousands of world systems.
4. Guidance for Maximizing this Merit
Luang Por Dhammajayo provided specific advice to elevate the merit of offering light to its absolute peak:
- Offer Practical and Enduring Illumination: Choose high-quality, energy-efficient light bulbs or continuous lighting solutions for the temple. Committing to paying the monthly electricity bill is a highly effective way to provide constant light.
- Clean the Lamps and the Temple: Volunteering to clean the temple’s lamps and keeping the grounds bright and spotless also generates the merit of clarity, helping to clear the mind of confusion and dullness.
- The Essential Vow: Make a firm resolution: “By the merit of offering this light, may my eyes be clear and flawless, and may I attain the Divine Eye. May my intellect be sharp and brilliant. May my life never fall into darkness, and when I meditate, may my mind become still, quickly reaching the bright, inner sphere of Dhamma and the Dhammakaya.”
