Executive Summary: Selling Alcohol Karma
A stern karmic case study from the Dream in Dream Kindergarten Wisdom School, taught by Ven. Luang Por Dhammajayo. This account exposes the dark reality of trading in alcohol and intoxicants. Even if the seller doesn’t drink, acting as a distributor of this “mindfulness-destroying poison” leads to shattered families, mentally impaired descendants, and terrifying torture in the 5th Major Hell.
1. The Poison of Mindfulness and the River of Fire
Alcohol, beer, and all recreational drugs are poisons that systematically destroy the nervous system and human mindfulness. When people consume them, they lose their moral compass, easily committing all other sins: killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, and lying. This single poison is the root cause of countless shattered families, tragic accidents, and ruined lives.
Many sellers use the excuse, “I just sell it; I don’t force anyone to drink.” However, the Law of Karma does not accept this defense. Being a producer, distributor, or seller of intoxicants is a direct violation of the Fifth Precept (as a facilitator). The seller accumulates a portion of the dark karma for every life and family destroyed by the alcohol they sold.
2. The Karmic Backlash for Merchants of Intoxicants
Those who build their wealth on selling alcohol and drugs will face severe karmic consequences related to the destruction of intelligence and sanity:
- Mentally Impaired and Addicted Descendants: In their current life, the wealth gained is “hot wealth.” Their family will lack true happiness. Their children or grandchildren are highly likely to be born with mental impairments (intellectual disability, autism) or become hopelessly addicted to drugs, mirroring the karma of destroying the intelligence of others.
- The Fifth Major Hell (Maharoruva Naraka): Upon death, their astral body plunges into the 5th Hell. Demonic wardens pry open their mouths and pour boiling, corrosive black acid (liquid iron) down their throats. The acid violently burns away their lips, throat, stomach, and intestines. They scream in agonizing pain, dying and reviving for eons.
- Lifetimes of Insanity: When they finally escape hell and are reborn as humans, the residual karma dictates that they will be born insane, severely mentally ill, or paralyzed from birth, completely unable to control their own minds.
3. Theravada Canonical Tipitaka References
The Buddha strictly prohibited Buddhists from engaging in the trade of intoxicants, classifying it as Wrong Livelihood:
Vanijja Sutta (Anguttara Nikaya)
“Monks, a lay follower should not engage in these five trades. What five? Trading in weapons, trading in living beings, trading in meat, trading in intoxicants (Majja-vanijja), and trading in poisons.”
4. Spiritual Solutions and Mitigation
For those currently engaged in selling alcohol or drugs, Luang Por Dhammajayo advised an urgent path for karmic mitigation:
- Stop Selling Immediately: You must completely cease the sale of all intoxicants. Even if it means a loss of income, closing the business or discarding the stock is the only way to cut the karmic cycle. Switch to a pure, Right Livelihood.
- Support Education and Dhamma: Take the money earned and donate it to educational funds for poor children, or sponsor the publication of Dhamma books. You must actively build intelligence and wisdom in the world to counteract the karma of destroying it.
- Strict Precepts and Meditation: Strictly observe the Five Precepts for the rest of your life. Meditate daily to purify your own mind and cultivate perfect mindfulness. Dedicate the merit to all the lives negatively impacted by the intoxicants you previously sold.
