Executive Summary: Loan Shark Karma

A stern karmic case study from the Dream in Dream Kindergarten Wisdom School, taught by Ven. Luang Por Dhammajayo. This account exposes the terrifying karmic consequences of usury—acting as a loan shark and charging extortionate interest rates. Exploiting the desperate leads to inevitable bankruptcy, rebirth as a burning hungry ghost (Preta), and lifetimes of unpayable karmic debt.

1. Trampling on the Tears of the Desperate

People seeking emergency loans are usually in a state of absolute despair and darkness. When a financier or loan shark uses this vulnerability to trap them with illegally high interest rates, compounding debt unfairly, or using violent and cruel debt collection methods, they are essentially sucking the lifeblood out of their fellow human beings.

This predatory behavior is a severe violation of the Second Precept (Adinnadana – stealing), as it involves taking wealth through systemic exploitation and extortion. The immense stress, tears, and suffering of the debtors—many of whom lose their homes, lands, or even driven to suicide—forge a heavy, burning karmic chain around the loan shark’s neck.

2. The Karmic Backlash of Predatory Lending

Those who build their wealth on extortionate interest will pay a painful and protracted karmic price:

  • Bankruptcy and Betrayal: In their current life, the wealth they amassed is “hot wealth.” It is magnetically drawn to destruction. They will inevitably be scammed by close associates or major debtors, losing everything and often going bankrupt, forcing them to experience the exact same panic and despair they caused others.
  • The Burning Hungry Ghost (Preta): Upon death, their astral body is heavily drawn to the Preta realm. They are reborn as grotesque hungry ghosts (such as the Asiloka Preta), their bodies constantly engulfed in flames, specifically burning their mouths and throats. This is the direct result of “eating” the hot, toxic interest derived from others’ suffering.
  • Lifetimes of Debt Slavery: When they finally escape the lower realms and are reborn as humans, they will be born into extreme poverty. They will be forced to perform grueling labor to pay off massive debts they did not incur, or they will be reborn as beasts of burden (like oxen) to physically work off their karmic debt to their former victims.

3. Theravada Canonical Tipitaka References

The Buddha explicitly defined Right Livelihood and warned that acquiring wealth through exploiting others leads to ruin:

Vanijja Sutta (Anguttara Nikaya)

While this Sutta specifically lists five trades to be avoided, the fundamental principle of Right Livelihood (Samma Ajiva) prohibits acquiring wealth through means that cause harm, exploitation, or immense suffering to others (such as predatory usury). Engaging in wrong livelihood guarantees a destination of suffering.

4. Spiritual Solutions and Mitigation

For those who have previously acted as loan sharks or charged unfair interest, Luang Por Dhammajayo advised an urgent path to mitigate this heavy karma:

  1. Immediate Forgiveness of Unfair Debt: Stop all predatory lending immediately. For existing debtors, reduce the interest to a fair, legal rate. If the debtor is truly destitute, forgive the debt entirely to cut the karmic cycle of vengeance.
  2. Purify the Wealth: Take the “hot wealth” earned from usury and donate it entirely to public charity—build hospitals, schools, help the poor, and support Buddhism. This transforms toxic money into pure merit.
  3. Dedicate Merit and Beg Forgiveness: Practice deep meditation and dedicate the merit specifically to all the debtors you exploited. Sincerely beg for their karmic pardon (Ahosi Kamma) to begin untying the knot of eternal debt.
