Executive Summary: Envy and Slander Karma
A case study on the severe consequences of envy and destroying others’ reputations through slander. This karma turns one’s own life into a miserable, lonely existence and leads directly to the 4th Hell.
1. The Self-Destructive Fire of Envy
Envy is a fire that burns the one who holds it. Unable to bear seeing others succeed, envious individuals often resort to slander (Musavada) to tear down their rivals, completely disregarding the truth and the pain they cause.
2. The Karmic Backlash
- Ugly Appearance: Envy corrupts the mind and body. In future lives, they will be born physically unattractive and repulsive to others.
- Constant Failure and Isolation: Because they pulled others down, their own endeavors will constantly fail. When they fall, absolutely no one will offer a helping hand.
- Victim of Slander: They will suffer exactly what they dished out. They will be framed, gossiped about, and constantly blamed for things they didn’t do.
- The 4th Hell (Jala Naraka): For severe slander, they will fall to the 4th Hell, where their tongues are pulled out and chopped off, or they are forced to drink molten copper for eons.
3. Spiritual Solutions
One must actively cultivate “Mudita” (Sympathetic Joy)—rejoicing in the success of others. Stop all gossip and slander immediately, strictly keep the Fourth Precept, and meditate to replace the fire of envy with the cool peace of loving-kindness.
