From the teaching series \”Inner Dreams Kindergarten\” by Luang Por Dhammajayo (Wat Phra Dhammakaya) — Exploring the profound reality of human existence through real-life case studies on the Law of Karma.

1. The Background: Endless Toil, Inescapable Poverty, and Perpetual Humiliation

This enlightening case study explores the metaphysical causes behind chronic socioeconomic hardship and social indignity. The subject was an extraordinarily diligent, honest woman who labored from dawn until dusk in menial employment. Despite her absolute honesty, total abstinence from vices, and relentless physical exertion, financial prosperity continuously eluded her.

Every small saving she accumulated was abruptly drained by unforeseen crises, fraudulent acquaintances, or exploitation. Furthermore, she was constantly subjected to stinging verbal contempt, mockery, and humiliation from employers, relatives, and neighbors. Heartbroken and perplexed, she wondered: Why does an honest, hardworking person suffer relentless poverty and social scorn? She consulted Luang Por Dhammajayo to understand her past-life karmic blueprint.

2. Luang Por’s Insight: Ancient Stinginess and Scornful Speech Toward the Impoverished

Luang Por Dhammajayo revealed through meditative vision that present-life poverty and social humiliation directly replicate past verbal cruelty and stinginess:

“Her current hardship and experiences of social contempt stem directly from ‘Severe Verbal Misconduct (Vaci-Duccarita) Intertwined with Extreme Stinginess (Macchariya)’ in a previous lifetime. In that past existence, she was born into an affluent aristocratic family but possessed a miserly, arrogant disposition, refusing to perform charitable almsgiving. Crucially, she routinely humiliated, mocked, and verbally degraded impoverished beggars, servants, and debtors. Whenever destitute individuals sought aid, she harshly cursed them: ‘You lazy fools deserve to starve forever in misery like stray dogs!’ That venomous verbal demerit became her own karmic destiny. In this lifetime, that ancient negative blueprint materialized: she was reborn into poverty, compelled to labor tirelessly for negligible returns, and forced to endure the exact verbal abuse and humiliation she once inflicted upon others.”

The spiritual principles governing verbal karma and poverty are categorized as follows:

  • The Seed of Stinginess (Macchariya): Refusing to practice generosity leads directly to material deprivation and financial stagnation.
  • The Karmic Rebound of Scornful Speech: Mocking and cursing the poor ensures one will experience poverty and public contempt in future lives.
  • The Mirror of Speech: Every hurtful word uttered against others becomes an unshakeable blueprint for one’s own future life experience.

3. Key Spiritual Lessons for Transforming Financial and Social Destiny

Luang Por provided essential guidance on rewriting one’s socioeconomic and spiritual destiny:

  1. Practice Loving and Gentle Speech (Piya-Vaca): Eliminate complaints, sarcasm, and bitterness. Speak only words of truth, encouragement, and wholesome rejoicing in others’ merits (Anumodana).
  2. Cultivate Consistent Daily Generosity (Dana): Despite modest means, practice daily almsgiving with profound joy, offering morning alms, supporting temple construction, and helping those in need to plant the seeds of future wealth.
  3. Center Consciousness Daily at the Center of the Body: Practice Dhammakaya meditation at the Seventh Base of the body (the center of the torso). The serene light of inner stillness purifies the mind, dissolving ancient negative karmic imprints.

Canonical Tipitaka References

  • Kokalika Sutta, Samyutta Nikaya (SN 6.10): The Buddha proclaimed: \”When a man is born, an axe is born inside his mouth. A fool cuts himself with it when uttering malicious speech, bringing about his own ruin.\”
  • Cula-kammavibhanga Sutta, Majjhima Nikaya (MN 135): The Buddha taught that refusing to give food, drink, and requisites to spiritual mendicants and the needy results in poverty and lack of wealth upon human rebirth.
