From the teaching series \”Inner Dreams Kindergarten\” by Luang Por Dhammajayo (Wat Phra Dhammakaya) — Exploring the profound reality of human existence through real-life case studies on the Law of Karma.

1. The Background: Terminal Liver Carcinoma in a Lifelong Non-Drinker and Vegetarian

This medical and spiritual mystery explores the metaphysical origins of advanced hepatic carcinoma appearing in the absence of conventional clinical risk factors. The subject was a health-conscious middle-aged woman who observed a strict vegetarian diet, engaged in regular physical fitness, maintained moral precepts, and had never ingested a single drop of alcohol throughout her life.

Suddenly, she developed chronic fatigue, severe right upper-quadrant abdominal discomfort, and progressive jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes). Computed tomography (CT) scans revealed advanced multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma (terminal liver cancer) infiltrating hepatic parenchyma and biliary ducts. Clinical oncologists were baffled, as she had zero history of viral hepatitis B/C or alcoholic cirrhosis. Perplexed by this unexpected affliction, her family consulted Luang Por Dhammajayo: What is the underlying karmic cause of liver cancer in a non-drinker?

2. Luang Por’s Insight: Harvesting Animal Gallbladders, Livers, and Poisoning Animals

Luang Por Dhammajayo revealed through meditative vision that liver and gallbladder cancers can manifest from past-life cruelty inflicted directly upon the internal organs of animals:

“Suffering from advanced hepatocellular carcinoma without a history of alcohol consumption is the direct harvest of ‘Past-Life Life-Taking (Panatipata) Involving the Live Extraction of Animal Gallbladders and Livers.’ In a previous lifetime, she worked as a traditional herbalist and hunter. When catching wild animals—including bears, snakes, monitor lizards, and venomous fish—she routinely slit open their abdominal cavities while they were still alive to excise fresh gallbladders and livers for tonics and elixirs. The creatures experienced excruciating burning pain, biliary rupture, and horrific shock before dying. Additionally, she mixed toxic baits to eradicate farm pests. That traumatic destruction of animal hepatic and biliary systems was inscribed in her subtle consciousness. Maturing in this lifetime, her own hepatic cells mutated into malignant tumors, obstructing bile flow and producing jaundice, exactly replicating the abdominal trauma she inflicted upon those animals.”

The spiritual mechanics of hepatic karma are categorized as follows:

  • Live Extraction of Animal Gallbladders: Direct karmic cause of biliary obstruction, jaundice, and hepatocellular carcinoma.
  • The Agony of Visceral Mutilation: Replicated as burning abdominal pain, ascites, and liver failure.
  • Karma Transcends Material Causes: While alcohol is a primary physical trigger, past visceral cruelty remains a powerful latent cause of hepatic disease.

3. Key Spiritual Lessons for Cellular Purification and Health Restoration

This case delivers essential moral guidance on non-violence toward internal animal organs:

  1. Refrain from Excising Animal Viscera and Poisoning Creatures: Maintain absolute non-violence toward all animals; reject traditional remedies derived from live animal cruelty.
  2. Sponsor Liver Medications and Release Captive Fish: Release fish slated for market slaughter and donate medical supplies to patients with liver disease to cultivate longevity.
  3. Practice Daily Meditative Stillness: Center consciousness at the Seventh Base of the body (the center of the torso) daily, visualizing the inner crystal body to purify bodily elements and radiating merit to all animals harmed in past lives.

Canonical Tipitaka References

  • Cula-kammavibhanga Sutta, Majjhima Nikaya (MN 135): The Buddha explicitly declared that those who habitually injure and mutilate living beings suffer from numerous bodily diseases and severe organ failures upon human rebirth.
  • Dandavagga, Dhammapada (Verse 137): Whoever inflicts weapons and violence upon harmless creatures quickly encounters severe physical pain, bodily destruction, grievous disease, or sudden dissolution of life.
