Case Study: Abortion Karma — Bloodline Panatipata and the Stigma in the Underworld

Executive Summary: Abortion Karma

A harrowing karmic case study from the Dream in Dream Kindergarten Wisdom School, taught by Ven. Luang Por Dhammajayo. This account exposes the terrifying reality of abortion. Classified as Panatipata (killing) against one’s own flesh and blood, it generates an extraordinarily heavy karmic burden that brings ruin in this life and severe retribution in the realms beyond.

1. Killing the Defenseless

Abortion, regardless of the justification—unpreparedness, economic hardship, or social pressure—is karmically classified as a complete violation of the 1st Precept (abstaining from killing). In Buddhism, a fetus is a living being the moment consciousness (Patisandhi-vinnana) enters the womb. Destroying this life, especially one’s own child, is a grievous sin.

The spirit of the aborted child is often consumed by fear, confusion, and deep resentment. Sometimes, these vengeful spirits attach themselves to the parents, actively obstructing their success, health, and happiness in life.

2. The Karmic Retribution of Abortion

Those who undergo an abortion, as well as those who support or perform it (partners, doctors, financiers), must face dire consequences:

  • Ruin and Illness: In the present life, they will face constant obstacles. Businesses will fail, relationships will shatter, and they are highly prone to severe illnesses related to the reproductive organs (such as uterine cancer or chronic pain) that are difficult to cure.
  • The First Major Hell (Sanjiva Naraka): Upon death, the astral body is dragged into the 1st Major Hell. Here, hell wardens mercilessly chop, crush, and dismember their bodies, mirroring the way the fetus was destroyed in the womb. They suffer this agony for eons.
  • The Blueprint of Womb-Death: Once they eventually escape hell and are reborn as humans, they will carry a dark “blueprint of womb-death.” For hundreds of future lifetimes, they will be aborted, miscarried, or die shortly after birth, endlessly repaying the karmic debt of denying life to another.

3. Theravada Canonical Tipitaka References

Buddhism clearly defines the beginning of life at conception:

Mahanidana Sutta (Digha Nikaya 15)

“Ananda, if consciousness were not to descend into the mother’s womb, would name-and-form (mind and body) take shape in the womb? (No, Lord)… Therefore, the descent of consciousness is the condition for name-and-form.”

Implication: Life begins at conception. Therefore, deliberately terminating a pregnancy is undeniably the taking of a human life.

4. Spiritual Solutions and Mitigation

For those who have made this grave mistake in the past, Luang Por Dhammajayo provided a strict method to lighten the karmic load:

  1. Sincere Repentance and Cessation: Make a resolute vow never to commit abortion again, nor ever encourage or assist anyone else in doing so for the rest of your life.
  2. Aggressive Life-Saving Merit: Counteract the karma of death by actively saving lives. Release animals destined for slaughter, donate blood, fund medical equipment, and provide medicine to monks and the sick.
  3. Meditation and Targeted Forgiveness: Practice meditation daily. When the mind is bright and peaceful, dedicate the merit specifically to the spirit of the aborted child. Sincerely beg for their forgiveness (Ahosi Kamma) and pray for them to be released from their suffering and resentment.
