From the teaching series \”Inner Dreams Kindergarten\” by Luang Por Dhammajayo (Wat Phra Dhammakaya) — Exploring the profound reality of human existence through real-life case studies on the Law of Karma.
1. The Background: Chronic Tobacco Addiction, Commercial Distribution, and Terminal Lung Cancer
This cautionary case study investigates the severe spiritual and post-mortem consequences of tobacco consumption and commercial distribution. The subject was an elderly man who was heavily addicted to cigarettes for over 40 years, smoking 2 to 3 packs daily. Furthermore, he operated a wholesale tobacco business, profiting from distributing addictive cigarettes and cigars throughout local communities.
In his elder years, terminal physical retribution manifested. He developed end-stage lung cancer and severe pulmonary emphysema. His lung tissues deteriorated into porous cavities, causing excruciating thoracic burning sensations as if glowing embers were scorching his chest. During his final days, he was dependent on mechanical ventilators, suffering immense asphyxiation and agony before expiring in distress. Relatives consulted Luang Por Dhammajayo: What is the metaphysical reality and purgatorial punishment for smoking and selling tobacco?
2. Luang Por’s Insight: Karmic Inscriptions on the Body and Netherworld Inhalation Torment
Luang Por Dhammajayo revealed through meditative vision that manufacturing, selling, and consuming tobacco incurs profound netherworld retribution:
“Consuming and commercially selling tobacco constitutes severe physical self-harm and the poisoning of public health. The toxic smoke distributed into society creates an indelible negative karmic bond connecting directly back to the merchant and the smoker. Upon death, his subtle body plunged directly into the Netherworld (Yama-Loka) auxiliary zone of the Fifth Hell. There, the denizen’s body was visibly marked by ‘Black Karmic Inscriptions and Cigarette Glyphs’ deeply etched across the entire skin. Netherworld wardens strapped his body to flaming iron posts, forcefully jamming giant, red-hot iron cigarettes into his mouth, compelling him to inhale searing acidic hellfire into his lungs. The infernal smoke incinerated his trachea, lungs, and internal organs in explosive agony, dying and reviving continuously. When eventually reborn as a human, he will suffer from putrid body odor, chronic respiratory diseases, severe lung cancer, and premature mortality across dozens of lifetimes.”
The spiritual mechanics of tobacco karma are categorized as follows:
- Karmic Inscriptions on the Subtle Body: The demerits of selling and consuming tobacco manifest as visible glyphs and tattoos in the netherworld.
- Purgatorial Inhalation Punishment: Forced inhalation of searing, acidic hellfire cigarettes that repeatedly disintegrate internal organs.
- Residual Earthly Afflictions: Chronic emphysema, lung tumors, foul breath, and social aversion in future human rebirths.
3. Key Spiritual Lessons for Health and Moral Discipline
This case delivers vital guidance on overcoming tobacco addiction and redeeming moral integrity:
- Abstain Completely from Tobacco and Vaping: Cease smoking and trade in tobacco products immediately to stop generating new karmic debts.
- Donate Respiratory Medical Equipment and Air Purifiers: Sponsor respiratory medications for monks and donate medical air purifiers to hospitals to rescue pulmonary patients.
- Purify the Body and Mind Through Meditation: Center consciousness at the Seventh Base of the body (the center of the torso), inhaling pure spiritual light to cleanse internal toxins and neutralize karmic impressions.
