EP.2 : Life Is so Brief
Luang Por teaches that this life is reckoned as a small thing, because it cannot be determined. We cannot determine on which day, month, or year we will die; only the day, month, and year of birth can be determined. The day, month, and year of death cannot be determined, except by one who has attained the higher supernormal knowledge. For this reason the Lord Buddha declared that life is small — born, we think we will live to old age, yet we may die in youth or middle age, because nothing has the power to obstruct death. Even with any spells or incantations to ward it off, death does not choose between commoner, king, monk, or brahmin, poor or rich — all must meet death. When there is birth, there must be death in the end.
Therefore the wise, the one who is not heedless of life, uses their time to good effect in building perfections (pāramī). Luang Por teaches us to hasten to make diligent effort from today, contemplating that life has a limited time. As darkness is not permanent, so the time of life slips away. In the remaining time we should hasten to do good, make much merit, practise generosity, keep the precepts, develop concentration and meditation, and develop wisdom, until the door to the realms of suffering is closed by developing insight to reach the Noble Path and Fruition, then go to Nibbana, the place of the highest, single, supreme happiness.
Profit or loss of life — the one who knows measures it by who accumulates merit through body, speech, and mind, day and night at all times; that person is said to have gained profit in life. Whoever accumulates unwholesome deeds is said to have lost in life. Whatever causes wholesome states to arise through body, speech, and mind is profit in life; whatever causes unwholesome states to arise is loss in life. For we have come to take the principle of heedfulness — do not be heedless of life, make diligent effort from today.
