The 5 Criteria for Well-Spoken Words (Abhaya Sutta, MN 58)

  1. Truthful (Sacca): Words grounded in reality, free from deceit.
  2. Affectionate and Polite (Sakhila): Words spoken with gentle courtesy.
  3. Beneficial (Atthasamhita): Words that bring true spiritual or practical benefit.
  4. Spoken with Goodwill (Metta-citta): Words motivated by pure love, not anger or malice.
  5. Timely (Kalena): Words spoken at the appropriate moment.
