[EN] Why Do Corrupt People Prosper While Good People Suffer? Decoding the Timeline of Karma
One of the most disheartening questions that shakes human faith in morality is: “Why do honest, compassionate people often struggle through hardship, illness, and poverty, while corrupt, unscrupulous individuals enjoy wealth, power, and prestige?”
This apparent injustice causes many to lose faith in goodness, prompting the cynical conclusion: “Does the Law of Karma even exist?” Yet, when analyzed through the profound framework of Buddhist metaphysics, we realize that human perception is merely viewing a microscopic snapshot of an infinite cosmic journey.
1. The Parable of the Harvest: Bean Sprouts vs. Fruit Trees
Consider the natural laws of agricultural germination:
- If you plant bean sprouts, you harvest within 48 hours, but the harvest is small, fragile, and fleeting.
- If you plant a noble durian or mango tree, you must cultivate, water, and wait patiently for 5 years before tasting its sweet, abundant fruit. Once mature, however, it shelters and feeds generations.
Karmic actions follow identical principles of ripening (*Kamma-vipāka*). Minor deeds yield rapid, shallow results; monumental spiritual virtue demands deep root-taking before bearing transcendent fruit.
2. The Three Horizons of Karmic Ripening
The Buddha mapped the exact temporal dimensions of action and consequence:
The Three Temporal Dimensions of Karma:
1. Diṭṭhadhamma-vedanīya-kamma: Karma experienced visibly in the present lifetime.
2. Upapajja-vedanīya-kamma: Karma that ripens decisively in the immediately following rebirth.
3. Aparāpariya-vedanīya-kamma: Indelible karma that follows the soul throughout samsāra, awaiting opportune conditions to mature until final enlightenment.
3. Why Do Bad People Still Prosper?
The prosperity of the corrupt is not proof that karma is broken; it is evidence of residual past merit (*Kusala-kamma*):
- Past good karma acts like an enormous spiritual trust fund or a bulletproof shield. Even as a corrupt person generates destructive new debts, their previous credit balance continues paying dividends.
- The Dhammapada explicitly cautions: “As long as evil has not ripened, the fool thinks it is sweet as honey; but when evil ripens, the fool falls into agonizing grief.”
- The moment that past credit balance is exhausted, the shield shatters instantly, and the compounded weight of their misdeeds crushes them completely.
4. Why Do Virtuous People Suffer?
Conversely, when a good person suffers, they are merely burning off residual debts contracted in past existences. The virtuous deeds they perform today are never lost—they are silently depositing vast capital into their spiritual account, awaiting the perfect season to blossom into enduring peace and freedom.
5. Conclusion: Steadfast Faith in Moral Truth
The cosmic law of cause and effect takes no bribes, knows no favoritism, and never forgets a debt. Cultivating virtue is never in vain. Maintain patience, guard your mind, and walk the path of integrity with unshakable conviction.
