From the teaching series \”Inner Dreams Kindergarten\” by Luang Por Dhammajayo (Wat Phra Dhammakaya) — Exploring the profound reality of human existence through real-life case studies on the Law of Karma.

1. The Background: Chronic Kyphosis, Severe Spinal Curvature, and Unrelenting Back Pain

This sobering case study investigates the karmic origins of severe degenerative spinal diseases, scoliosis, and kyphosis (hunchback condition). The subject was an elderly man who enjoyed sound physical fitness during his youth. However, upon reaching his 50s, a progressive spinal deformity emerged: he developed severe chronic lumbar pain, and his spinal column gradually curved and bowed forward relentlessly.

Over time, his thoracic and lumbar spine bent into a permanent severe arch, transforming him into a severely hunched individual unable to stand upright or look straight ahead. He was forced to walk bent double, staring constantly at the ground, while compressed spinal nerves caused agonizing radiating pain down both legs. Despite orthopedic braces and surgical evaluations, the severe skeletal deformity was irreversible. His children consulted Luang Por Dhammajayo: What is the karmic cause of severe spinal curvature and hunchback disability?

2. Luang Por’s Insight: Overloading Pack Donkeys and Clubbing Animal Spines in Past Lives

Luang Por Dhammajayo revealed through meditative vision that severe spinal deformities and hunchback conditions directly mirror past cruelty in overloading pack animals:

“Suffering from severe kyphosis, spinal curvature, and chronic compressive nerve pain in this lifetime is the direct harvest of ‘Past-Life Animal Mistreatment and Overloading Burden Beasts.’ In a former lifetime, he worked as a merchant organizing overland caravan transport, keeping donkeys, mules, and pack oxen. He habitually loaded massive, excessive commercial cargo onto the backs of his donkeys until their spines sagged and bowed under crushing weight. Furthermore, possessing a heavy physical frame himself, he routinely sat atop the already overloaded donkeys, mercilessly clubbing and whipping their spinal columns whenever the exhausted beasts slowed down or collapsed. The donkeys suffered severe spinal inflammation, fractures, and excruciating pain. That crushing trauma inflicted on animal spines became his karmic blueprint. Matured in this life, his own spinal column degenerated, bent forward, and became severely hunched, exactly replicating the physical agony he once inflicted on his donkeys.”

The spiritual mechanics of spinal karma are categorized as follows:

  • Overloading Pack Animals: Direct karmic cause of spinal curvature, herniated discs, scoliosis, and hunchback conditions.
  • Clubbing Animal Backs: Results in severe spinal nerve compression, lumbar neuralgia, and inability to stand upright.
  • Lack of Compassion for Beasts of Burden: Binds the soul to physical disability, physical distortion, and dependency in old age.

3. Key Spiritual Lessons for Bodily Alignment and Animal Compassion

This case delivers essential moral guidance on compassionate treatment of working animals:

  1. Never Overload or Torment Working Animals: Treat all domestic and working animals with mercy, providing adequate rest, sustenance, and humane care.
  2. Sponsor Monastery Pillars, Bridges, and Temple Stairways: Support the construction of load-bearing pillars, roof beams, bridges, and temple steps. The merit of supporting sacred structures creates a strong, upright spinal blueprint.
  3. Practice Daily Loving-Kindness Meditation: Center consciousness at the Seventh Base of the body (the center of the torso) daily, dedicating merits to all donkeys, oxen, and burden animals harmed in past lives to seek mutual pardon (Ahosikamma).

Canonical Tipitaka References

  • Cula-kammavibhanga Sutta, Majjhima Nikaya (MN 135): The Buddha taught that those who habitually torment living beings suffer from numerous physical deformities, bodily afflictions, and chronic ailments upon human rebirth.
  • Valamukha Jataka, Khuddaka Nikaya (Jat 12): Canonical narrative illustrating the karmic retribution awaiting those who ruthlessly exploit and torment innocent beasts of burden.
