From the teaching series \”Inner Dreams Kindergarten\” by Luang Por Dhammajayo (Wat Phra Dhammakaya) — Exploring the profound reality of human existence through real-life case studies on the Law of Karma.
1. The Background: Local Liquor Merchant, Chronic Alcoholism, and Terminal Laryngeal Cancer
This sobering case study examines the precise physiological and post-mortem retribution incurred by selling and consuming alcoholic beverages. The subject was a middle-aged man who operated a grocery store and retail liquor enterprise for decades, distributing hard liquors, moonshine, and beers throughout his village. Concurrently, he was heavily addicted to alcohol, drinking continuously from dawn until nightfall.
Upon reaching his 50s, severe physical retribution manifested. He developed chronic throat soreness, severe hoarseness, dysphagia (inability to swallow), and hemoptysis (coughing up blood). Clinical examinations diagnosed advanced terminal laryngeal and esophageal carcinoma. The malignant tumors expanded aggressively, completely obstructing his esophagus and trachea. Unable to ingest food or water orally, he underwent tracheostomy surgery for respiration and gastric tube feeding. He experienced excruciating burning pain in his throat as if glowing embers were lodged within his neck, expiring in agonizing torment. His family consulted Luang Por Dhammajayo: What is the karmic cause of throat cancer and the post-mortem reality for liquor merchants?
2. Luang Por’s Insight: Wrongful Livelihood in Intoxicants, Scalding Animals’ Throats, and Boiling Copper in Hell
Luang Por Dhammajayo revealed through meditative vision that terminal throat cancer results from the convergence of intoxicant trade, personal drinking, and past-life cruelty to animal throats:
“Suffering from terminal laryngeal cancer and esophageal obstruction in this lifetime is the direct convergence of ‘Wrongful Trade in Intoxicants (Majja-Vanijja), Chronic Drinking, and Past Cruelty in Slashing and Scalding Animal Throats.’ In a previous lifetime, he sold liquor and worked as a poultry butcher. When slaughtering chickens, ducks, and birds, he slit their throats and poured boiling scalding water down their beaks and necks to facilitate defeathering. The creatures suffered excruciating burning pain in their throats before suffocating to death. That physical cruelty, compounded by selling alcohol that destroyed others’ mindfulness and drinking heavily in this life, converged directly at his vocal cords and esophagus. The unwholesome energy materialized as malignant tumors, replicating the burning agony he inflicted on animals. Upon physical death, his subtle body plunged directly into the Fifth Great Hell (Maharoruvā). Pinned down by hell wardens, flaming iron pliers forced open his mouth while boiling liquid copper was poured down his throat, incinerating his larynx, esophagus, and stomach in unending subterranean torment.”
The spiritual mechanics of throat cancer and alcohol trade are categorized as follows:
- Majja-Vanijja (Trading in Intoxicants): Severe wrongful trade that destroys public mindfulness, attracting severe diseases of the digestive and respiratory systems.
- Slashing and Scalding Animal Throats: Direct karmic cause of laryngeal tumors, vocal cord destruction, and esophageal blockages.
- Retribution in the Fifth Hell: Enduring forced ingestion of flaming molten copper that continuously incinerates the throat and internal viscera.
3. Key Spiritual Lessons for Healthy Living and Moral Purification
This case delivers essential moral guidance on ethical commerce and health preservation:
- Cease Selling and Drinking Alcohol Immediately: Transition to blameless commercial goods to stop generating destructive karmic debt.
- Offer Nutritious Alms Meals and Clean Drinking Water: Offer refined meals, clean water, and medical requisites for digestive ailments to Buddhist monks to build future throat and digestive health.
- Practice Daily Loving-Kindness Meditation: Center consciousness at the Seventh Base of the body (the center of the torso) daily, radiating forgiveness and merit to all animals one has harmed in past lives to dissolve lingering karmic bonds.
Canonical Tipitaka References
- Vanijja Sutta, Anguttara Nikaya (AN 5.177): The Buddha explicitly prohibited trade in intoxicants (Majja-Vanijja), citing it as a major cause of moral degradation and descent into hell.
- Sigalovada Sutta, Digha Nikaya (DN 31): The Buddha enumerated the six ruinous consequences of drinking intoxicants, including instant loss of wealth, increased quarrels, severe physical diseases, loss of reputation, and destruction of wisdom.
