One of the hardest relationship lessons is accepting that love cannot remake another person. You can encourage change, but you cannot choose it for them.
See What Is Actually Under Your Control
Your words, actions, boundaries, and responses are yours. Another person’s habits and decisions are not.
Notice the Suffering of Resistance
The mind says, “They must change before I can be at peace.” Observe how much suffering this condition creates.
Choose Wise Action
Speak clearly about what you need. Offer reasonable support. Set boundaries around behavior that harms you.
Do Not Confuse Acceptance With Approval
Acceptance means seeing reality clearly. It does not mean saying that harmful behavior is acceptable.
A Five-Minute Practice
Write two columns: “mine” and “not mine.” Put the person’s choices in the second column and your next responsible action in the first.
Love Without Losing Yourself
Sometimes wisdom means staying, sometimes changing the relationship, and sometimes leaving. Let the decision come from clarity rather than the fantasy of control.
