From the teaching series \”Inner Dreams Kindergarten\” by Luang Por Dhammajayo (Wat Phra Dhammakaya) — Exploring the profound reality of human existence through real-life case studies on the Law of Karma.
1. The Background: Two Decades of Agony, Deformed Articulations, and Rheumatoid Arthritis
This sobering case study investigates the karmic origins of severe degenerative joint diseases and physical disability. The subject was an elderly woman who suffered for over 20 years from severe rheumatoid arthritis and advanced osteoarthritic knee destruction.
The joints of her fingers, toes, elbows, and knees became violently inflamed, swollen, and distorted into crooked, claw-like deformities. She experienced excruciating burning and deep bone pain as if thousands of hot needles were piercing her bone marrow continuously. Unable to stand or walk, she became wheelchair-dependent and bedridden. Despite advanced orthopedic interventions, high-dose analgesics, and bilateral total knee replacement surgeries, the severe burning pain never subsided. Her children consulted Luang Por Dhammajayo: What is the past karmic cause of such agonizing joint deformities and chronic pain?
2. Luang Por’s Insight: Striking Servants’ Knees and Clubbing Animal Joints in Past Lives
Luang Por Dhammajayo revealed through meditative vision that severe articular deformities and bone pain represent the direct karmic rebound of physical violence inflicted upon servants and livestock:
“Suffering from severe rheumatoid arthritis, deformed joints, and agonizing bone pain is the direct harvest of ‘Past-Life Violence and Physical Abuse of Subordinates and Servants.’ In a previous lifetime, she lived as an affluent business owner and plantation matriarch possessing numerous household servants and slaves. She had an aggressive, irritable temperament, mercilessly overworking her laborers. Whenever servants worked slowly, displayed fatigue, or broke utensils, she flew into violent rages, using thick wooden sticks, broom handles, and heavy rods to brutally strike and batter their knees, ankles, elbows, and joints. Many servants suffered shattered kneecaps, severe swelling, and permanent limping. Additionally, she routinely clubbed the legs and hocks of oxen and buffaloes that pulled carts too slowly. That cruelty inflicted upon human and animal joints became her karmic blueprint. Matured in this life, her immune system attacked her own articular tissues, producing severe joint deformation and chronic pain, exactly mirroring the trauma she once inflicted on her subordinates.”
The spiritual mechanics of articular karma are categorized as follows:
- Bludgeoning Servants’ Knees and Joints: Direct karmic cause of rheumatoid arthritis, bone deformities, and loss of mobility.
- Overworking Laborers and Animals: Results in chronic physical exhaustion, helplessness, and dependency in old age.
- The Agony of Injured Servants: Replicated as unrelenting bone burning and neuralgic pain resistant to modern pharmacotherapy.
3. Key Spiritual Lessons for Compassionate Leadership
This case delivers essential moral guidance on ethical treatment of subordinates:
- Treat Employees with the Four Sublime States (Brahma-Vihara): Practice loving-kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity toward all workers. Provide fair wages and never resort to verbal or physical abuse.
- Donate Mobility Equipment and Sponsor Medical Care: Donate wheelchairs, prosthetics, and artificial joints to impoverished patients, and sponsor medications for ailing monks to cultivate bodily vitality.
- Practice Meditation and Radiate Forgiveness: Center consciousness at the Seventh Base of the body (the center of the torso) daily, dedicating merits to all past servants and animals one may have mistreated, seeking mutual pardon (Ahosikamma).
Canonical Tipitaka References
- Cula-kammavibhanga Sutta, Majjhima Nikaya (MN 135): The Buddha explicitly declared that those who habitually injure and torment other beings with fists, clods, sticks, or weapons suffer from numerous chronic diseases and physical disability upon rebirth as humans.
- Dandavagga, Dhammapada (Verse 137): Whoever inflicts violence upon harmless beings soon incurs severe bodily pain, mutilation of limbs, grievous incurable diseases, and physical destruction.
