From the teaching series \”Inner Dreams Kindergarten\” by Luang Por Dhammajayo (Wat Phra Dhammakaya) — Exploring the profound reality of human existence through real-life case studies on the Law of Karma.

1. The Background: Betrayal by a Trusted Partner, Total Bankruptcy, and the Urge for Vengeance

This gripping case study examines the multi-lifetime dynamics of reciprocal betrayal and the liberating power of forgiveness. The subject was an ambitious entrepreneur who established a commercial enterprise in partnership with his closest friend, whom he trusted implicitly as a blood brother. However, as the company prospered, generating tens of millions of baht in profits, the trusted friend forged signatures, embezzled corporate treasury funds, and illicitly seized complete ownership of the corporation.

Left entirely bankrupt and saddled with overwhelming corporate debts, the subject experienced violent psychological anguish and vindictive rage. On the verge of hiring a hitman to assassinate his betrayer, he visited Wat Phra Dhammakaya to practice meditation. The soothing power of Dhamma calmed his turbulent mind, prompting him to consult Luang Por Dhammajayo: Why was he betrayed by his most trusted friend, and how should he resolve this bitter crisis?

2. Luang Por’s Insight: The Endless Cycle of Reciprocal Defraudation and Severing the Chain of Feuds

Luang Por Dhammajayo revealed through meditative vision that present-life betrayal is merely the ripening of an ancient karmic debt between intertwined adversaries:

“Being betrayed and defrauded by his closest friend in this life is the direct manifestation of ‘A Reciprocal Karmic Feud Spanning Lifetimes.’ In a former existence, they were commercial trading partners. In that lifetime, the subject was the one who fraudulently embezzled their shared profits, seized the business, and drove his partner into destitute bankruptcy. The defrauded partner died in agony and vindictive hatred, vowing: ‘May I be reborn to swindle and destroy you in future lives!’ In this lifetime, ancient karma inverted their roles: the former victim returned as the trusted partner who embezzled his wealth to reclaim that unpaid debt. If the subject had executed a contract killing, he would have committed severe murder (Panatipata), descending into subterranean hell and ensuring he would be murdered by this adversary in a subsequent rebirth—creating an endless cycle of murder and theft across Samsara.”

The spiritual principles governing reciprocal betrayal are categorized as follows:

  • No Random Financial Losses: Present-life defraudation represents the settlement of past debts owed to ancient karmic creditors.
  • Hatred Ceases Only Through Non-Hatred: Retaliation through violence or lawsuits only cements the karmic knot for future rebirths.
  • The Ultimate Power of Forgiveness (Abhaya-Dana): Granting unconditional forgiveness and letting go permanently shatters the karmic chain of Samsara.

3. Key Spiritual Lessons for Transcending Betrayal and Rebuilding Life

This case delivers essential moral guidance on navigating betrayal and injustice:

  1. Grant Complete Spiritual Pardon (Ahosikamma): Regard the loss as full payment of an ancient debt, extinguishing all thoughts of vengeance, resentment, or retaliation.
  2. Restart Enterprise Grounded in Pure Merit: Dedicate life to Right Livelihood, almsgiving, moral discipline, and meditation to attract untainted, protected wealth.
  3. Radiate Loving-Kindness to the Betrayer: Center consciousness at the Seventh Base of the body (the center of the torso) daily, dedicating merits to the former friend, wishing him spiritual awakening and freedom from hell demerit.

Canonical Tipitaka References

  • Yamaka-vagga, Dhammapada (Verse 5): \”Na hi verena verāni sammantīdha kudācanaṁ, averena ca sammanti esa dhammo sanantano\” — \”Hatred is never appeased by hatred in this world. By non-hatred alone is hatred appeased. This is an eternal law.\”
  • Kosiya Jataka, Khuddaka Nikaya (Jat 226): The Bodhisatta taught that betraying and swindling a loyal friend brings catastrophic ruin upon one’s wealth and rebirth in states of misery.
