From the teaching series \”Inner Dreams Kindergarten\” by Luang Por Dhammajayo (Wat Phra Dhammakaya) — Exploring the profound reality of human existence through real-life case studies on the Law of Karma.

1. The Background: Nocturnal Swarms and the Failure of Triple Mosquito Netting

This baffling and profound case study explores the inescapable precision of karmic attraction. The subject was a woman who encountered a terrifying physical anomaly: every night upon going to sleep, swarms of biting midges, beetles, venomous mosquitoes, and flying insects numbering in the thousands selectively converged upon her body alone.

To shield her, her family constructed a sealed glass bedroom, applied commercial pest sprays, and erected three concentric layers of thick mosquito netting around her bed. Yet astonishingly, the insects mysteriously bypassed all three mesh layers—penetrating the enclosure to swarm, bite, and sting her face, arms, and legs. She suffered agonizing pruritus, burning skin inflammations, and pustular rashes that deprived her of sleep, whereas other family members sleeping in the same room remained completely untouched. Mystified and exhausted, she consulted Luang Por Dhammajayo: What is the metaphysical cause behind this selective insect torment?

2. Luang Por’s Insight: Past-Life Hive Smoking and Mass Extermination of Small Creatures

Luang Por Dhammajayo revealed through meditative vision that no physical barrier can block the magnetic vibration of maturing karmic debts:

“The swarming of insects through triple-layered netting is the direct harvest of ‘Past-Life Destruction and Smoking Out of Beehives and Ant Colonies.’ In previous existences, she lived as an orchardist and hunter. To harvest honey and protect crops, she habitually built thick smoky bonfires with straw and wood, smoking out beehives, wasp nests, and ant colonies. Millions of innocent small insects suffocated in toxic smoke, were roasted by intense heat, and perished in agony. Furthermore, she deployed toxic pest poisons, wiping out massive insect swarms across farmlands. That collective trauma inflicted on countless small beings became deeply recorded in her subtle consciousness. In this lifetime, that latent demerit matured, emitting a specific karmic frequency that instinctively attracts insects to her physical form. The subtle debt magnetized them through the mesh netting to exact retribution, perfectly replicating the burning torment she once inflicted upon them.”

The spiritual mechanics of insect karma are categorized as follows:

  • Karma Transcends Physical Barriers: No physical enclosure or triple netting can obstruct the precise magnetic pull of ripening karmic retribution.
  • The Demerit of Mass Extermination: Smoking out hives destroys millions of lives simultaneously, resulting in chronic dermatological suffering, burning pain, and pustules.
  • Karmic Frequency Attraction: Subtle demerits project an invisible energetic frequency that draws former victims and karmic creditors directly to the debtor.

3. Key Spiritual Lessons for Resolving Karmic Debts

This case delivers essential moral guidance on non-violence toward small creatures:

  1. Abstain from Exterminating or Smoking Out Nests: Refrain from burning hives, spraying poisons, or killing small creatures; employ humane, natural deterrents.
  2. Release Captive Animals and Donate Mosquito Netting to Monks: Sponsor the release of livestock from slaughter and donate umbrellas, mosquito nets, and monastic lodgings to Buddhist monks to cultivate protective merit.
  3. Cultivate Boundless Loving-Kindness Meditation (Metta): Center consciousness at the Seventh Base of the body (the center of the torso) daily, radiating pure cooling loving-kindness to all insects and creatures harmed in past lives to dissolve karmic hostility.

Canonical Tipitaka References

  • Papavagga, Dhammapada (Verse 121): The Buddha proclaimed: \”Do not underestimate evil, thinking it will not come back to you. Just as a water pot fills drop by drop, so a foolish person accumulates evil little by little until overwhelmed by suffering.\”
  • Cula-kammavibhanga Sutta, Majjhima Nikaya (MN 135): The Buddha taught that harming and injuring living creatures results in chronic illness and physical distress upon rebirth as a human.
