From the teaching series “Inner Dreams Kindergarten” by Luang Por Dhammajayo (Wat Phra Dhammakaya) — Exploring the profound reality of human existence through real-life case studies on the Law of Karma.

1. The Background: Chronic Affliction and Persistent Obstacles

Among the universal laws that govern existence, the Law of Karma operates with absolute precision. The karma of destroying life (Panatipata), especially human life, carries profound consequences that echo across multiple lifetimes.

In this case study, a devotee consulted Luang Por Dhammajayo regarding a series of persistent crises that plagued her life and family. Despite diligent effort, her business ventures repeatedly collapsed, financial losses occurred without warning, and she suffered from severe chronic health conditions, particularly excruciating abdominal pain, reproductive disorders, and recurrent surgical interventions that medical science could not permanently cure.

With deep remorse, she disclosed that during her youth, due to life pressures and ignorance, she had consented to an abortion. This memory remained a source of deep guilt and spiritual sorrow. She sought Luang Por’s guidance on the karmic reality of her situation and how to find spiritual redemption.

2. Luang Por’s Insight: The Karmic Mechanics of Terminating Life

Luang Por Dhammajayo explained the Buddhist metaphysical reality of conception: The exact moment an embryo forms (the kalala state), a conscious subtle body enters the womb to take rebirth. Thus, human life begins at fertilization, possessing full spiritual status.

Terminating a pregnancy fulfills all factors of taking human life, severing the soul’s precious opportunity to accumulate merit on earth. This act generates distinct karmic ripples:

  • The Plight of the Fetal Consciousness: The aborted soul is thrust into confusion, trauma, and lingering resentment. Unable to move forward to higher realms without sufficient merit, the spirit often lingers near the parents in anguish and hunger.
  • Health Repercussions: Karmic momentum gravitates directly toward the physical regions corresponding to the harm inflicted, manifesting as chronic uterine disorders, pelvic tumors, or repeated abdominal surgeries.
  • Obstacles in Life and Wealth: Just as one severed the life opportunities of an unborn child, the karmic echo returns to sever career prospects, wealth generation, and personal happiness.

3. The Spiritual Path to Alleviate Karmic Debt

Luang Por provided clear, practical Buddhist principles to dissolve this karmic burden and transform heavy retribution into light consequences:

  1. Let Go of the Past: What is done cannot be undone. Continuously dwelling on past misdeeds only clouds the mind, allowing negative karma to gain momentum. One must resolve to move forward with a renewed heart.
  2. Uphold the Five Precepts Strictly: Observe moral discipline daily, particularly the First Precept against harming living beings. Practice releasing animals (fish, birds, or cattle destined for slaughter) regularly to cultivate compassion and longevity.
  3. Dedicate High-Merit Actions: Dedicate oneself to wholesome deeds—offering food, supporting Sangha, building temples, and maintaining deep daily meditation.
  4. Targeted Dedication of Merit: After every meritorious deed, maintain a still, bright mind, apologize sincerely to the departed soul, and specifically transfer the merits to the aborted child. When the subtle body rejoices in this transferred merit and forgives the past, it transitions to a peaceful heavenly realm, and the heavy karmic ties naturally loosen and dissolve.

Canonical Tipitaka References

  • Vinaya Pitaka, Mahavibhanga (First Parajika): The Buddha explicitly decreed that intentionally destroying human life from the moment of conception (kalala) constitutes the grave offense of homicide.
  • Cula-kammavibhanga Sutta, Majjhima Nikaya (MN 135): The Buddha taught that harming and killing sentient beings leads to short lifespan, illness, and suffering, whereas non-harming and compassion lead to longevity and radiant health.
  • Petavatthu, Khuddaka Nikaya: Canonical scriptures documenting the karmic suffering of spirits tied to past abortion acts, who attained liberation once living relatives dedicated wholesome merits on their behalf.
