From the teaching series “Inner Dreams Kindergarten” by Luang Por Dhammajayo (Wat Phra Dhammakaya) — Exploring the profound reality of human existence through real-life case studies on the Law of Karma.

1. The Background: Why Are Some Born into Constant Struggle?

One of the most persistent questions in human experience is: Why are human beings born into such radically unequal circumstances? While some arrive into loving, affluent households with every comfort provided, others are born into severe poverty, familial discord, and an unbroken chain of hardships.

In this case study, a devotee consulted Luang Por Dhammajayo regarding her sorrowful life trajectory. Born into extreme destitution, her parents constantly quarreled and ultimately separated during her childhood. She was forced to engage in grueling manual labor from an early age merely to finance her own basic schooling. As an adult, despite acting with goodwill, she was consistently taken advantage of by relatives and friends, frequently forced to shoulder massive debts incurred by others. Overwhelmed by exhaustion, she asked: What karmic deeds cause a life of such unrelenting hardship?

2. Luang Por’s Insight: The Karmic Blueprint of Poverty and Broken Families

With deep compassion, Luang Por Dhammajayo explained that neither luck nor divine intervention dictates human circumstances; our present reality is the direct mathematical fruition of our own past actions:

  • Born into Destitution and Scarcity: Results from past lifetimes characterized by extreme stinginess (Macchariya). When monks, ascetics, or destitute people requested aid, one turned away, hoarded wealth, or ridiculed the impoverished. Lacking the spiritual capital of generosity (Dana), one is reborn into environments devoid of material resources.
  • Broken, Discordant Family Environment: Stems from past violations of the Third Precept (sexual misconduct), combined with speech karma that caused discord among others, or abandoning dependents in past existences.
  • Betrayed and Saddled with Others’ Debts: Traces back to previous lifetimes of defaulting on obligations or breaking promises to assist others. The karmic echo returns, requiring one to repay emotional and financial debts in this lifetime.

3. Transforming Destiny from Adversity to Prosperity

Although past karma cannot be rewritten, Luang Por provided actionable Buddhist principles to overwrite past negativity with powerful new merit:

  1. Supreme Filial Piety (Matapitu-upatthana): Support and care for parents to the utmost of one’s capacity, regardless of past family fractures. Filial gratitude generates immense protective merit capable of anchoring life against the darkest adversities.
  2. Give from What Little You Have: To break the cycle of poverty, one must cultivate generosity. Even offering a modest coin or sharing a simple meal with pure joy produces exponential spiritual potency, akin to planting seeds in drought that yield rich fruit later.
  3. Shield Life with the Five Precepts: Moral discipline closes the doorway to the lower realms and halts the generation of new karmic debts.
  4. Daily Inner Stillness Meditation: Centering the mind at the Seventh Base purifies subconscious grief, restores mental resilience, and naturally attracts noble friends and breakthrough opportunities.

Canonical Tipitaka References

  • Cula-kammavibhanga Sutta, Majjhima Nikaya (MN 135): The Buddha explained that failing to give food, drink, clothing, and shelter to ascetics and the needy leads to rebirth in poverty with meager possessions, whereas habitual generosity leads to great wealth.
  • Mangala Sutta, Khuddaka Nikaya: The Buddha identified “Matapitu-upatthanam” (supporting one’s parents) and “Dananca” (practicing generosity) as among the supreme blessings that guarantee life advancement and happiness.
