From the teaching series “Inner Dreams Kindergarten” by Luang Por Dhammajayo (Wat Phra Dhammakaya) — Exploring the profound reality of human existence through real-life case studies on the Law of Karma.
1. The Background: Trapped in a Marriage of Cruelty and Contempt
Marriage is idealized as a partnership of mutual affection and sanctuary, yet for certain individuals, marital life transforms into a protracted waking nightmare. Despite boundless devotion, they endure perpetual verbal debasement, emotional cruelty, and physical brutality from their spouse.
In this case study, a devotee consulted Luang Por Dhammajayo regarding her sorrowful marriage. She served her husband with unwavering fidelity, managed the home with diligence, and sought only harmony. Yet her husband exhibited profound temperamental cruelty: regularly beating her, hurling abusive epithets, and repeatedly degrading her self-worth by asserting that her entire existence was worthless—declaring she was worth less than a single domestic chicken. Baffled as to why her patience and virtue yielded only suffering, she sought to understand the karmic debt she was repaying.
2. Luang Por’s Insight: The Mirror of Past Domination and Verbal Cruelty
Through spiritual vision, Luang Por Dhammajayo revealed that within Samsara’s karmic ledger, no affliction arrives without precedent:
“In a distant past existence, this devotee was born as an affluent, aristocratic man who owned numerous domestic servants and maintained multiple wives. Possessing an arrogant, tyrannical disposition, whenever enraged, he physically battered his wives and servants mercilessly. On one specific occasion, in a fit of rage, he viciously humiliated one of his wives, shouting: ‘Your entire existence is worthless; you have less value than a single chicken in my coop!'”
This kinetic imprint of cruel speech and physical oppression remained embedded within the spiritual center of the soul. After enduring heavy subterranean hell retribution, the residual karmic seeds manifested upon returning to the human realm:
- Rebirth in the Female Form: A natural consequence of past sexual misconduct, infidelity, and tyrannizing women, causing the soul to transition from male to female.
- Enduring Identical Retribution: Karmic mechanics operated like an exact mirror. In this lifetime, she married a man who embodied the exact temperament she once exhibited, and she was forced to hear the exact phrase—being told she was worth less than a chicken—completing the karmic cycle.
3. Resolving Karmic Entanglements
Luang Por provided essential guidance to extinguish this karmic debt and prevent the perpetuation of vendettas across future lives:
- Practice Total Forgiveness (Ahosikamma): Recognize that this adversity is the maturation of one’s own ancient deeds. Refrain from retaliating with violence or malice, thereby halting the generation of new karmic debts.
- Cultivate Humility and Generosity: Routinely engage in charity, assist vulnerable individuals, and liberate captive animals. Treating all sentient beings with honor neutralizes ancient arrogance.
- Radiate Metta Through Meditation: Center the mind at the Seventh Base of the body. Radiate pure loving-kindness specifically toward the spouse and past karmic debtors, asking for forgiveness. Sincere merit dedication gradually softens relational hostility and dissolves ancient karmic bonds.
Canonical Tipitaka References
- Cula-kammavibhanga Sutta, Majjhima Nikaya (MN 135): The Buddha explained that those who are proud, haughty, and fail to show respect to others are reborn in low-status circumstances where they are habitually despised and treated with contempt.
- Itivuttaka, Khuddaka Nikaya (Dutiya Sutta): Canonical expositions demonstrating that harming and debasing the innocent inevitably rebounds upon the perpetrator with tenfold suffering, physical ruin, and mental torment.
