Easy but Deep 2 EP.9: The Sport of Jhana

EP.9 : The Sport of Jhana

Luang Por teaches that sport of jhana is the sport for those who possess jhana, the knowers — the inner spheres layering and expanding, the spheres of virtue (sila), concentration (samadhi), wisdom (panna), and liberation (vimutti). This differs from the sport of those who do not know, which is mixed with calamity. The sport of jhana brings only merit, delight, happiness, and rapture.

The method Luang Por teaches is to close the eyes gently and comfortably, make the mind cheerful and bright, pure and clear, then stop the mind at the centre of the body, base 7, which lies in the middle of our abdomen, about two finger-widths above the navel. Contemplate a bright sphere or a clear crystal Buddha image and let the mind stop there — choose just one of the two and do not waver, for within the sphere there is the Buddha image, and within the Buddha image there is a bright sphere. When the mind stops still, brightness arises of its own accord. Do not be shaken by the darkness that veils the mind, for darkness does not last forever — when the mind stops still, inner brightness appears.

Luang Por teaches that the practice of meditation must be “easy but deep” — making the difficult easy, yet profound and moving, only then is it in accordance with the principle of knowledge. It is not about making the easy difficult, which is not in line with the principle. Observe the teaching of the Lord Buddha, who taught the four assemblies and they attained penetration of the Dhamma immediately, because his teaching was easy yet profound and attainable. Each of us can likewise reach the Knower within ourselves, just as the Buddha reached the Dhamma Body of the Perfectly Enlightened One — the body of the Knower within. We must attain it, for this is the true work of being born human, the duty that should be done. Only diligence and effort remain, then practice correctly according to the principle of knowledge, consistently, with mindfulness and ease — before long we are sure to succeed in reaching the Triple Gem within.
